James's Obituary

Mr. James Edwin Bryan, Jr., 90, widower of Madge Collins Bryan, of Myrtle Beach, passed away peacefully with his daughters by his side at his residence, on Saturday, April 20, 2024, during the early morning, after an extended period of declining health.

Mr. James, a loving husband, father, grandfather, great grandfather, and friend to many, was born on March 21, 1934, in Marion County, South Carolina. He was the son of the late James Edwin Bryan and the late Nina Skipper Bryan. Mr. James grew up in and around Marion County, graduating from Rains High School. Following high school James enlisted in the United States Air Force, serving as a Military Police Officer. Following his service to his country and meeting his wife, Madge, James moved to Myrtle Beach in 1959, to work in Accounting for C. Foster Smith for 20 years. James also worked as Comptroller for the Sea Mist Resort and Family Kingdom Amusement Park beginning in 1981 and was there for 25 years. Following his previous job, because James could not be idle, he worked with his son-in-law, Jack Wright, CPA, for 7 years and only then decided to retire.

James loved to stay busy and when he was not working, he loved to play golf and work in his yard. He loved people, was a constantly active person and loved traveling. Mr. Bryan was a member of the Kiwanis Club, serving as president for a time. Served as a Director of Myrtle Beach National Golf Club. Mr. Bryan was a member of the First Baptist Church of Myrtle Beach, where he served as a Deacon and Sunday School teacher. “It’s hard to forget someone who gave you so much to remember.”

Mr. Bryan is survived in death by his children: his daughters: Vickie Bryan Wright and her husband Jack, of Myrtle Beach and Aynor, and Karen Bryan McCurry and her husband Brent, of Myrtle Beach; his daughter-in-law, Paula Patton Bryan; his grandchildren: Shay (Libby) Wright, Weston (Mallorie) Wright, Reid (Heather) Jenkins, Justin Jenkins, and Stephani (Matt McCracken) Jenkins; 12 great grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews. “Daddy, your guiding hand on my shoulder will remain with me forever.”

James was predeceased by a son, James Edwin “Jimmy” Bryan, III, and a sister, Miriam Gasque.

A graveside service for Mr. Bryan will be held Thursday afternoon, April 25 at 2:00 P.M. in Red Hill Memorial Gardens Cemetery, with the Reverend Robbie Baxley officiating. The family will speak with friends following the funeral at the cemetery. Cox-Collins Funeral Home of Mullins is serving the family during this difficult time.

The family would like to express a heartfelt “thank you” to Gentiva Hospice for their love and care they provided Mr. James during their time together.
