Not sure what to say?

It was an honor to know Jim as and adult who was afraid of giving advice to people he knew. I learned a lot that had guided me through who I am today. That is why he had such a wonderful generous loving family. You will be missed, Rest in Peace Jim.

Jim was the best friend another Air Force Aviation type could ever have while working for the FAA in the DC area. He was part of the lunch crowd who rode the metro looking for decent restaurants to celebrate birthdays, holidays and retirements. Missed him once he left our group to move to Texas.

My sincere condolences to the immediate and extended families of Brother Campbell. May God bless him and keep him along with all of you now and forever. Peace be with him and all of us. Until we meet again.....

You were a great cousin. Thank you for the genealogy. I know you are in a good place

James's Obituary

James Vernon Campbell Jr., 85, passed away peacefully on Saturday, May 4, 2024, in San Antonio, Texas. He was born on January 18, 1939, to James and Marie (Crofford) Campbell in Alice, Texas.

At the age of 17, Jim enlisted in the US Marine Corps, serving with honor in Korea during the Korean War.  He later transferred to the US Air Force, retiring in 1976 with the rank of Master Sergeant. Following his military service, Jim joined the Civil Service, working as a Communications Engineer for the Department of the Navy at Corpus Christi Naval Air Station until his retirement in 1995. Continuing his dedication to public service, he then worked as a contractor with the FAA until retiring in 2005.

After 50 years of devoted service to our nation, Jim retired to the tranquil beauty of the Texas Hill Country, making his home in Blanco.  From a young age, Jim harbored a passion for aviation, learning to fly small planes at just 15 years old.  Though he never pursued his pilot's license, his enthusiasm for aviation remained evident as he often engaged in discussions about it with friends and family.  During his time in Corpus Christi, he developed a keen interest in sailing by taking family and friends on adventures.

In 2017, Jim became a proud member of the Blanco Masonic Lodge 216 AF & AM, where he served as Master of the Lodge from 2022 to 2023.  A self-taught genealogist, Jim spent countless hours meticulously researching his family lineage.  At the time of his passing, he was deeply engrossed in writing a biography on the Past Masters of Blanco Lodge.

Jim was preceded in death by his loving parents, his son James V. Campbell III, his brother Kenneth Paul Campbell and granddaughter Sara Shacklett.

In 1985, Jim found lasting companionship when he married Edna, blending their families together with love and devotion.  He cherished his role as a family man, prioritizing the love and support of his loved ones above all else.

He is survived by his beloved wife Edna (Wratten) Campbell, his brother Robert E. Campbell of El Paso, TX, Carole J. Campbell of Corpus Christi, TX, his sons Brian C. Campbell (Kathy) of Johnson City, TX, Lawrence N. Campbell (Lili) of Elgin, TX, William R. Liller Jr. CW4 Army (Ret) (Tracy) of Kempner, TX, Christoper Liller (Paula) of Katy, TX, Dani Liller of Blanco, TX, his daughter Elizabeth Shacklett of Corpus Christi, TX, Maria Sanchez a cherished family friend of Blanco, TX,  along with 15 grandchildren, 16 great-grandchildren, 1 great-great-grandchild and numerous cousins.

Jim will be fondly remembered and deeply missed by all who had the privilege of knowing him.

A memorial service honoring Jim’s life will be held at 10:00 AM, Saturday, June 15, 2024 at Crofts – Crow Funeral Home in Johnson City.  Interment services with full military honors will follow at the Johnson City Masonic Cemetery.

*In lieu of flowers, the family respectfully requests memorial tributes be made in the form of contributions to the local food bank, or the Blanco Masonic Lodge 216.
