James's Obituary

James Early Davis of Capahosic, lifetime resident of Gloucester, Virginia,  passed away peacefully at his home on June 23, 2025, he was 91 years old.

Jim was born to Mary Josephine Davis and Jubal Early Davis in Capahosic during a family summer visit to their grandparents. Eventually his parents moved the family to Capahosic, where Jim grew up with his three brothers and two sisters on the York River.

Jim Davis graduated from Botetourt Highschool and enlisted in the army during the Korean War, where he served as a radio operator.  After the army he took night classes in chemistry and spent many years at Dow Chemical Company and spent many  weekends tending crab pots as a waterman.

As a friend and an uncle to many, he was a kind man who was always there to help his brothers, sisters, and their children.  He was easy to confide in and always made you feel good about yourself.  His home in Capahosic,  which he grew up in and ended up living in after his mother passed away, was always open to his siblings, their children and their friends.  Many summers were spent on the river with Uncle Jimmy. He was famous for taking us nieces and nephews out on his boat to enjoy the York River, which continued for multiple generations.  His kindness extended to his neighbors in Capahosic and  also throughout Gloucester County, as a volunteer for meals on wheels. His friendly demeanor and his concern for others made him a welcome sight when he made his deliveries. Bringing meals and talking to the recipients was a joy for Jim. He will be greatly missed.

He was preceded in death by his parents, and his brothers, John, Robert, and Raymond and his sisters, Mary D. Marnix and Dorothy D. Grenfell. He is survived by his nieces, Mary Coyle, Dorothy Pappas, Christy Vanvarick, Mary Jo Pulliam and many great nieces and nephews.
