James "Jim"'s Obituary

SARATOGA SPRINGS, NY- James “Jim” Vincent Chatfield, 87, of Saratoga Springs, NY, passed away peacefully on July 10.  He was born July 28, 1937 in Brooklyn, NY to the late Edwin and Helen Chatfield.

Jim grew up in the Flatbush neighborhood of Brooklyn with his brother Ed and sister Helen, along with many dear friends who he kept in touch with throughout his life.  It was there that he met and married Suzanne T. Chatfield, his wonderful wife of 62 years.  Jim was a devoted father to his four children Chris, Cathy, Brian and Patrick and loving grandfather to Terry, Andrew, Daniel, Spencer, James, Thomas and John.

Jim graduated from St. Francis College in Brooklyn before embarking on a career in beverage sales and sales management that took the family to Ohio and Massachusetts before settling in Montvale, NJ where they resided for 26 years.  After a long career with stops at Gallo Wines, Charles Krug Winery, and Diageo, and many travels throughout the US and Europe, Jim retired as President of Peerless Importers, a wine and liquor distributor in Brooklyn, NY.

A lifelong fan of thoroughbred horse racing, Jim and Sue retired to Saratoga Springs, NY living for many years at Water’s Edge on Saratoga Lake and later in downtown Saratoga.  Jim and Sue wintered in Longboat Key, FL.

An excellent handicapper, many summer afternoons were happily spent in his Owner’s Box with family and friends at Saratoga Race Course.  Jim was an avid sports fan and enjoyed attending games for his beloved Brooklyn Dodgers, and later Mets, Giants, Rangers, and Knicks.  He also loved to golf and was proud of his hole-in-one at the TPC River Highlands in 1997.  Few who knew Jim as an adult would ever have guessed that he spent much of his childhood in and out of the hospital and endured multiple leg surgeries that left him on crutches for most of his youth.

Jim was a proud volunteer with SCORE, providing advice to small business owners and dedicated supporter of Saratoga ARC.

A Funeral Service will be conducted at 11am on Tuesday July 15, 2025 at the Historic Church of St. Peter, 241 South Broadway.   Burial will follow in Greenridge Cemetery, Saratoga Springs..

In lieu of flowers donations can be made to Youth on Course (www.youthoncourse.org).
