Mr. James L. (Mack) McCullough Jr., 61, of Charlotte NC departed this life on October 27, 2023 at Novant Hospice.
Friends and family will be received at the home of H. Eric and Sharon Davis.
James Loague McCullough Jr., age 61, affectionately known as “Mack or Little Mack,” peacefully transitioned to his heavenly home on the afternoon of Friday, October 27, 2023, at Novant Health Presbyterian Medical Center. Mack lived a vibrant, joy-filled life. All who knew him can attest that to know Mack was to love Mack.
Mack was born February 16, 1962, in Charlotte, NC, to the union of James L. McCullough Sr. and Dorothy Mae Bullard McCullough. His parents, who preceded him in death, affectionately called him Sonny! They adored and loved Mack. He was the light of their lives. Mack grew up in Charlotte, NC, in the University Park neighborhood. He loved Abelwood Road and the neighborhood so much that he never left. He maintained childhood friendships and remained loyal to his “boys” and friends or family until the end.
Mack was a product of Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools and a proud member of the 1981 graduating class of West Charlotte High School. It was at West Charlotte High School that Mack gained his athletic support experience. He was a coach’s assistant for the football, basketball, and track teams throughout high school and post-graduation.
Mack always had a love of sports. He was an avid fan of Duke Blue Devils Basketball and the Dallas Cowboys. He went on to find the career of his dreams in 1988 as the Assistant Equipment Manager for the original Charlotte Hornets. Mack always continued serving athletes. Mack also served as the Equipment Manager for the Charlotte Sting and Charlotte Knights. After the brief team hiatus out of Charlotte, Mack resumed his NBA career as the first Assistant Equipment Manager for the Charlotte Bobcats and later, when the team rebranded to the Hornets. As we know it, Mack had been one of the longest-serving employees in the Hornet’s Basketball Operations. For Mack, supporting the teams, coaches, and organizations from behind the scenes was everything. He never wanted the attention focused on himself. He found his joy in ensuring every need of others was met to perfection. Mac was known to always have his little notebook filled with player, coach, and entertainer preferences. He would spend hours before games or events getting everything ready and having what people wanted and needed on hand. He gave 210%.
Mack worked tirelessly until his life changed in the twinkling of an eye. On the night of January 21, 2017, Mac finished his Hornets’ post-road trip routine at the Spectrum Center. Sometime during the night, Mack suffered a massive stroke. The effects of the stroke left him with a vastly different life. He was unable to continue the work he dearly loved. He spent the last years of his life in a skilled nursing facility. Although Mack’s light dimmed a little, his spark remained the same. Mack maintained his sense of humor, was his own best advocate, and never changed who he was. Even hours before his death, Mack was still Mack.
Mack leaves to cherish fond memories, a host of cousins, friends, acquaintances, colleagues, Mary Smith (sister), and a special uncle, James H. Webber of Shelby, NC.
