James's Obituaries

James “Jamie” Bradford McCann, Sr., 63, of South Casco and South Portland passed away on September 14, 2017 at Maine Medical Center in Portland with his loving family by his side.

Jamie was born on October 15, 1953 in Boston, MA, the son of Walter V. and Helen B. (Kenyon) McCann.  Growing up he was an avid swimmer, competing and breaking records in the Butterfly, Backstroke, Breaststroke and Freestyle events.  The medals Jamie earned filled many boxes.A proud member of the Marines (USMC), “Semper Fidelis”, he was stationed at Marine Corps Air Station (MCAS) El Toro, Santa Ana, California.  He achieved the rank of Lance Corporal and was a Statistics Administrator. He enjoyed driving his convertible on the Pacific Coast Highway and visiting the many Spanish Missions along with all that California had to offer.  He was awarded the Good Conduct Medal, National Defense Service Medal - Rifle Marksman.; Rifle Expert.Jamie moved to Maine in 1975 and attended the University of Southern Maine, and Southern Maine Vocational Technical Institute, (SMVTI) which is now SMCC.  His professors recognized his writing ability and they encouraged him to write. He was a good listener and observer with a keen insight into human nature. He was very generous, kind and caring.

Jamie met the love of his life Linda Ann McCann in 1977. Together they enjoyed skiing, socializing, traveling, dancing (waiting in line at Studio 54 in NY), and motorcycle riding in Maine and Canada, (Jamie later rode with his son). He was an awesome gardener; growing vegetables, flowers and herbs. He was a wonderful chef, constantly creating delicious dishes. Jamie and Linda were married and made their home in South Casco for over 33 years raising two children, Pauline Violet McCann and James Bradford McCann Jr.  He loved being home with his wife and family. The family enjoyed boating in Casco Bay, lobstering, cruises to Boothbay Harbor, the basin and Sea Ray weekends with Port Harbor Marine. They enjoyed the marina life and brought the kids up boating.  He had a vast and diverse skill set and mechanical aptitude. He could fix anything!

Jamie worked for the City of Portland, Maine for over 40 years.  He was a dedicated, conscientious, and loyal employee, providing steadfast service to the Water Resources Department.  He approached all tasks with a no nonsense, common sense attitude. Jamie loved history and his office area could always be found surrounded by photographs of construction projects as far back as the early 1900’s.  When he worked on 17 Arbor Street in Portland he had “Engine Company Number Nine Firehouse” added to the U.S. National Register of Historic Places. He was proud of this accomplishment. He had many ongoing certifications through the years.
