Dear Sadie and family. We are so sorry to hear of Tarz' passing. We just found at (Aug. 13 at 7:30 PM). We hate that we missed visiting with all of you! Love to all and we just loved Tarz! We will all see him again on Heaven's Bright Shore!

I am sad to hear of the loss of Brad. He was always so friendly and talk to me whenever he saw me. He surely will be missed. Prayers for Sadie and all the family.

Brad will definitely be missed. He was an exceptional person Brad was a devoted family man and he and Sadie helped others whenever possible. He was used to being strong and working hard and I know it was hard for him to depend on others for help. The world has lost a wonderful man. I am so sorry for your loss.

James "Tarz"'s Obituary

Marion, VA 

James Bradford “Tarz” Greer, age 82 passed away Friday August 8, 2025 at his home in Marion, VA. 

Tarz was born in Smyth County, VA, to the late Bruce and Lucille Davis Greer and was preceded in death by his sister, Betty Louise Testerman; his brother, Billy Edward Greer; son in law, Lynn VanHoozier.

He was a proud veteran, serving 37 years with the U.S. Army and the Department of Defense, retiring in 2003. He served 2 tours in Vietnam and receieved several medals of valor to include the Purple Heart. Tarz was a dedicated member of the American Legion Post #18 in Marion, VA, where he served as commander for 25 years. He was also a member of the Francis Marion VFW Post #4667 and the DAV chapter 39. 

A beloved husband, father, and grandfather, Tarz was also known as the unofficial Walmart greeter. He enjoyed hunting, fishing, working crossword puzzles, and watching westerns. He was a hardworking man and a steadfast advocate for veterans throughout his life.

Left to cherish his memory are his wife of 56 years, Sadie Stamper Greer; daughters, Laura Greer VanHoozier, Tammie Greer Parks, Tonja Greer (Jamie) Jackson, sons, JB Greer, Randy Greer; grandchildren, James Owens, Trevor (Adrienne) VanHoozier, Sarah (Brandon) Ratliff, Colby Corvin, Indie Greer; great grandchildren, Andrew Owens, Zoey Owens, Storie Owens, Sawyer Ratliff; special great granddaughter, Harper Pruitt; sister, Lois Greer Richardson; brother, Blaine Greer; special lady, Lisa Dockery the grandmother of the three great grandchildren; step grandchildren, Bradley VanHoozier and Casey Fulton; sister in law, Wilma (Glenn) Rouse; brothers in law, Millard, and Don Stamper. Tarz is also survived by many friends from the American Legion Post # 18, Francis Marion VFW Post 4667 and his furry companion Shadow.

Funeral services will be held at 7PM Tuesday August 12, 2025 at Bradley’s Funeral Home in Marion with Reverend Mark Chaney officiating. The family will receive friends from 5-7PM prior to services.  Entombment with Full Military Honors rendered by the US Army Honor Guard will be at 11AM Wednesday at Rosewood Memorial Gardens in Rural Retreat. In lieu of flowers memorial contributions can be made to the American Legion Post #18, 107 Laurel Springs Road Marion, VA 24354.  Expressions of sympathy may be sent to the family at www.bradleysfh.com.  Bradley’s Funeral Home is proudly serving the Greer family.
