Not sure what to say?

This is a very belated condolence. I was looking up Jim's email to send him a note, as we had not been in touch for a while, and I thought to check first on Google to see if perhaps he had moved. I was so shocked to see that Jim had passed away. Jim and I first corresponded in the 1990s. He was a source of knowledge and inspiration when I was researching "Mischlinge," and after my book Divided Lives was published. We were at a few conferences together and were guests in 2004 on a radio...

So sorry to just now find out that Dr. Tent passed away. Had him for several German history courses back in the mid 70's at UAB. He was a wonderful teacher of supreme intellect who always inspired you to know more. He was also possessed of a timely sense of humor. Loved it when he played the spoons. I know his affable engaging spirit is missed by all who knew him. He was one of a kind. Godspeed Dr. Tent.

I just only recently found out about Professor Tent's passing of a couple years ago, he was a colleague of my father's, Otto Pflanze. I met James when he attended Otto's funeral in 2007 in Maryville TN. A wonderful man and I will never forget the kind words he had for my father. My very belated condolences to the Tent family. James is one of those kind souls who you do not easily forget.

I'm as annoyed by my tardiness in this memorial as I am saddened to learn of his passing, but just like grad school I'm sure he'd forgive me with a knowing look over his glasses. Dr Tent was a wonderful historian, a stand-up gentleman, and a wise counselor in life and academics. I'll never forget talking to him about a block of the Berlin Wall at the Eagle Scout Memorial at Liberty Park outside of Birmingham, AL. When I told him I wished I could've been part of that history, he brought me a...

We are very sorry that Jim has left us. We met him in 1969/70 in Madison, Wisconsin and ever since we were very close friends. Whenvever Jim was in Germany either by himself or with his family he was our guest in Bonn and we enjoyed his company. We enjoyed his sense of humour, his spirit and his fundamental knowledge of German history. His love for his children was adorable.
Jim, we miss you !
Virginia and John , you lost a most wonderful father who loved you and your mother more...

So sorry to hear of Jims passing. I have many fond memories of him from my days of playing bagpipes in the AL P&D band in Birmingham. Many condolences to the family.

Friend, Gentleman, Mentor at UAB - RIP

I only learnt today (July 18, 2018) about Jamess passing away. It filled me with deep sorrow as the two of us go back many decades, both being historians, both working on the German Social Democrats in our PhD and both having a special relationship with Freie Universität Berlin. His thorough study on the first 40 years of Freie Universität became a standard work often referenced when the universitys history was cited and her very special way of struggling for an international recognition...
