Jay W. Elbel, 89, of Rossiter, died Tuesday, January 16, 2024, at Beacon Ridge in Indiana.

He was born June 21, 1934, in Banks Township, Indiana County, a son of the late Alice M. (McFarland) and Edward C. Elbel.

On September 25, 1954, he married Nancy J. (Mallory) Elbel, who preceded him in death on April 16, 2020.

Jay was a graduate of the Punxsutawney High School Class of 1951.  He worked for the B&O Railroad for twenty years as a clerk and then retired from the United States Postal Service as a mailman on the Rossiter route after thirty-nine years, including his years as a substitute.

He was a fan of the Pittsburgh Steelers and the Pirates.  He enjoyed working on his father’s farm, watching game shows, especially Wheel of Fortune, mowing grass, working, and growing strawberries, which he did for many years.

Jay was an avid blood donor and was proud for having donated many gallons of blood throughout his lifetime.

He is survived by four children, daughter Paula Elbel of Indiana, son Donald J. Elbel of Punxsutawney, daughter Beth Giroskey and husband David of Punxsutawney, and daughter Joy Elbel of DuBois; four grandchildren, Jennifer Hill and husband Jack, Donald E. Elbel, Jr. and Tavia Henry; and two brothers, George Elbel and wife Norma of Elba, NY, and Bill Elbel and wife Jo of Houston, TX.

In addition to his wife and parents, he was preceded in death by an infant daughter Melinda Elbel, an infant granddaughter Brianna Galentine, daughter-in-law Jennifer S. Elbel, sister Mary E. Justice, and three brothers, Glenn, Emery, and Eugene Elbel.

A private funeral service will be held for the family.
