Jean Stocking Newman passed away peacefully on July 18, 2025, at the age of 87, surrounded by her family during the last few days of her life. Jean lived her life with a constant smile on her face. A trait remembered by all who knew her.
Jean was born to Allen and Mary Hamilton Stocking on September 21, 1937. She married Laury Ronald Newman on May 13, 1957. Jean and Laury were later sealed in the Salt Lake Temple on June 10, 1965. Jean was a lifelong resident of Riverton, Utah – a place very dear to her. She attended Elementary School and Junior High School in Riverton where a few of her children also attended Elementary School in the same building. She graduated from Jordan High School in 1955. Throughout her school years she enjoyed many activities; among them twirling baton for the marching band and membership in the Jordan High Charlonion Pep Club. Music played a vital role in Jean’s life as she learned to play the violin and piano. She sang in the Ward Choir for most of her life and passed her love of music on to her children.
In her young adult life Jean worked at the Kress Department Store in downtown Salt Lake City and then for the Glens Falls Insurance Company. Throughout most of her working life Jean was employed by Jordan School District in various roles at Riverton Elementary, Westvale Elementary, and finally Bingham High School where she was loved by students, faculty, and administrators.
Family gatherings were important to Jean throughout her life. In Riverton, she was surrounded by many immediate and extended family members, and they gathered often to share meals, conversation, and other activities. This gathering tradition kept her family close and connected – which she cherished.
As a member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints, Jean found fulfillment through her committed service to Primary children and Young Adults. Later in her life she served a full-time Church Mission with her husband Laury in the Tampa Florida area – an experience she spoke of fondly. Jean also loved serving in the Temple. Church Service was central to who Jean was as a person and many were positively impacted through her Church Service.
Jean learned how to sew from her mother, a skill she used her entire life. She made clothes for her children and cowboy shirts for Laury, even making a horse blanket for one of Laury’s horses. Sewing was also a hobby she shared with several of her friends in the neighborhood. Jean loved to attend all the activities her children and grandchildren participated in. If there was a game, concert, music or dance recital on the calendar, she was present. Another of Jean’s favorite things to do was to go dancing with her husband Laury. It’s likely they danced in every dance hall in the Salt Lake area, including the famed
Saltair Resort on the Great Salt Lake. Those who saw them dance envied the way they moved around the dance floor.
Jean was preceded in death by her husband Laury, her parents Allen and Mary Stocking, and brother Dick Stocking. She is survived by her sister Sue (Bob) Davis, brother Craig (Jolayne) Stocking, sister Jan (Wilson) Svedin, sister Joan (Don) Lybbert, brother-in-law Tom Newman, and her children; Kerry (Julie), Wade (Annette), Todd (Machelle), Jill (Mike) Hightower, and Chad (Allison). With 21 grandchildren, and 67 great grandchildren, the Jean and Laury Newman family number 100, soon to be 102.
Funeral services will be held at 11:00am Saturday July 26, 2025, in The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints chapel located 12574 S 1700 W Riverton, UT. Viewings will be held Friday July 25, 2025, at the Broomhead Funeral Home 12600 S 2200 W Riverton from 6:00pm to 8:00pm, and again on Saturday July 26, 2025, from 10:00am to 10:45am at the same church where the funeral will be held. Interment will be in the Riverton City Cemetery. The family expresses our sincere appreciation for the care she has received from The Ashford Care Center in Draper, UT.
