Jeanette Douglas Denham was born on October 27, 1936, in St. Michael, Barbados, West Indies, to the late Edmond Douglas and Elizabeth Brathwaite Douglas. From the very beginning, Jeanette’s life was rooted in love, family, and quiet strength.
At a young age, Jeanette migrated to the United States, where she attended Boys and Girls High School in Brooklyn, New York. After graduating, she met the love of her life and soulmate, Johnnie Denham, Sr. Their union was sealed in marriage on July 3, 1970, and together they shared a beautiful 55 years of marriage, raising two beloved sons.
Jeanette dedicated many years of service to Pace University in New York City, where she worked as a key punch operator before retiring early from her career. Following her husband’s retirement in 1989 from the New York City Police Department, the couple relocated to Chesapeake, Virginia, where they made their home and built a life filled with love and cherished memories.
Jeanette was known for her warm spirit, infectious laughter, and radiant smile—one that could light up any room she entered. She took great pride in her home and found joy in sewing, keeping everything spotless, nurturing her many plants, and relaxing with her favorite television shows, including Good Times, Martin, and Columbo. Music also brought her great happiness, especially Calypso and Reggae, which always lifted her spirit.
Jeanette was preceded in death by her four siblings: three sisters, Elaine, June, and Ione, and one brother, Urban.
She leaves to cherish her loving memory her two sons, whom she truly adored: Johnnie Denham, Jr. of Chesapeake, Virginia, and Eric Denham of Brooklyn, New York, and his wife, Ulrica Denham. She was a devoted grandmother to five grandchildren: Tekeva, Muhammad, Elazarus, Uriah, and Alim, and a proud great-grandmother to four great-grandchildren: Taniy, Tory, Tru-King, and Taylor.
Jeanette is also survived by two nephews, Wallace Merriam, Jr. (wife, Cheryl) and Scott Merriam (wife, Shawn); one brother-in-law, Wallace Merriam, Sr.; and a host of cousins, extended family members, and dear friends who will forever treasure her love, laughter, and gentle presence.
Jeanette Douglas Denham’s legacy lives on through the lives she touched, the love she shared, and the memories that will remain forever in the hearts of those who knew and loved her.
