John Anello Obituary

John R. Anello, age 67, passed away suddenly on November 15, 2020 at his residence. A lifelong resident of Pittsburg. He graduated from Pittsburg High School in 1971; where he excelled in baseball. He began teaching at St. Peter Martyr School in 1977. During his time at St. Peter Martyr, he was a teacher, boys’ basketball coach and athletic director. He would remain there until his retirement in 2018. He was well loved by the students, faculty and  parents. He was an avid sports fan, participated in local softball and bocce ball leagues. John’s real joy was fishing and hanging out on his boat with a cool one. He also enjoyed trips to Reno-Tahoe and to the local racetrack. John was competitive, not to say he was a poor sport, but he did not like to lose. He used to say “It doesn't matter if we win or lose as long as we win!"

He was a member of the Pittsburg Elks Lodge Local #1474 and was a self-proclaimed Beatles fanatic.

John was preceded in death by his parents Sam and Vinnie Anello. He is survived by his older brother Frank and sister-in-law Donna Anello and younger brother and best friend Sam Anello.  Also, by many nieces, nephews, cousins, aunts, uncles, godchildren and lifelong friends. He will be truly missed by everyone that knew him.

John now joins his Heavenly Father in Heaven, where there are no losers, only winners.

Due to COVID-19 restrictions there will be no celebration of life services held at this time. In memory of John, please send contributions to St. Peter Martyr School 425 W. 4th Street, Pittsburg, Ca 94565.

I just found out about Mr Anello’s passing and while I hadn’t seen him in some time, it is incredibly sad to lose such a great man. I remember the Beatle’s records, basketball teams, baseball teams, and history lessons like it was yesterdayhe was always a friend to us all and we had no idea how lucky we were.

I distinctly remember the “sucker contests” when in the 4th gradeonce a week he’d come into class with exotic math equationsyou won that week, you won the suckerI tell my kids about this all the time and attribute my ability to work numbers solely on Mr Anello’s Sucker Contest!!!

A friend and just a terrific man! RIP Mr Anello..,you are loved and missed.

Our sincere condolences to the family and many dear friends of John Anello. Mr. Anello was a Pittsburg Community treasure. He taught and coached each of our 8 children at St. Peter Martyr School in our 25 years there. With Joe and Rocco, John was one of the “Three Tenors” of SPM, and his song will ring in our hearts forever.

YESTERDAY, I was here enjoying life
with my family and friends, sometimes
putting in a HARD DAY'S NIGHT,
at SPM, bocce with my buds,
fishing on the YELLOW SUBMARINE (my boat)
or listening to the BEATLES (my favorite).
So PLEASE PLEASE ME, don't be sad for I am
with MOTHER MARY, and she will
take good care of me.
So let's COME TOGETHER, and say Thanks,
for the memories to our friend and teacher.

John,

You have been with us every step to share memories and milestones. You saw Joe through Pony League and Pittsburg High School, and watched over and taught Giuliana, Teresa, and Giovanni in the 7th grade.

You celebrated Joe and Caterina’s wedding with us, and each kid’s birth and birthdays.

You always made every moment unforgettable, whether it was singing onstage with Diana Ross or singing out on the boat you and Joe owned together to your favorite Beatles tunes.

It is hard to believe that you’re no longer present to share memories with us. Every new bocce win, every Beatles tune, every new fishing trip will be bittersweet. We know you’ll still be with us and we will cherish the memories made. Enjoy singing up there with George Harrison and John Lennon!

I had the privilege to have Mr.Anello as my baseball & basket ball coach & as a teacher. He taught me alot about sportsmanship & how to be a good Christian. Once in a while he would get pretty upset with me cause I drove him nuts! But he always took the time to teach me & coach. I remember when I played for Pitt he would be up in the stands giving me a thumps up after a play. He will be missed!

Words cannot begin to express my heartbreak over the loss of John! He was not only one of my favorite teachers, but a good friend of the family! I have so many memories of John! He always encouraged us to excel and not to back down! His love for the Beatles was unsurpassed by anyone else! In fact, if you did a report or speech on the Beatles you could get instant extra credit! ( He would be sure your facts were correct! ) He actually loved the fact that the two of us admired the same Beatle George Harrison! John Loved our country and taught us The Constitution well! He made us sit outside with him and we had to recite the Preamble to a T! He came to our birthday parties along with Frank Tamony, Radar, Rocco, and Joe! Bus trips to Reno with him were a blast! I think he took a piece of all our hearts with him! My prayers and Love go out to all his family, especially to Sam who not only lost a brother, but his best friend! May you walk among the angels now John in the Glory Of Our Father In Heaven! Love you my Dear Friend, Teacher! Beatles Forever! Cathy ❤

Mr Anello was my 7th grade teacher when I attended SPM. Seems just like yesterday I was just there and now I’m a graduating senior at SFSU. I will forever cherish those Beatles chats we’d have after school and the tin lunchbox he gave me which is of course Beatles. He was a great teacher and will be missed. I send Mr Anellos family my deepest condolences.
