Not sure what to say?

In celebration of a life well lived, seven years after his passing but only a day since I learned about it, just wanted to acknowledge a wonderful person who touched many souls with his humor and generosity. May he rest in peace!

I am a little late in writing about Jack because I did not know he had passed away a couple of years ago. I knew Jack in several capacities, first as a graduate student, then as a Maxwell Teaching Fellow and also as Curator of Collections and Research at the Maxwell Museum of Anthropology at UNM. Jack was always friendly and witty and fun to be around. Most of all, he probably indirectly, was responsible for me getting my first professional job in the National Park Service. Jack had been...

Great Scot!! janet

I met Jack in 2005 when I bought Desert
Photo where I had the privilege of printing his B&W work, and the pleasure of getting to know him. There were times when Jack liked to portray himself as "a crotchety old man"; in fact, he was a sweetheart. On the few occasions when we were out to lunch, or
running errands, it seemed Jack knew everyone, and everyone loved Jack. I treasure fond memories of conversations, laughs, and butting heads over a print or two. He remains in my heart....

I first met jack September, 1966, as a transferring sophmore. On the advice of an archeologist I'd met (Ed Hall, if memory serves), I introduced myself to him with a message of "hello" from Ed Hall. I was just barely 19 and for me, meeting the department chair was a thrill and an honor. He wore that damned Yale blazer just about everyday (swithing to the light blue seersucker for the warmer months). He was so proud of his Yale degree (and rightly so.) He was "an Alaskan archeologist," but...

Jack inspired me, through his book and photographs, to appreciate, visit, and photograph Chaco Culture National Historical Park, New Mexico. His other three fine books were most appreciated. He shared unstintingly with me his zeal for life.

I'm so sorry to hear of your loss. My thoughts are with your family.

With my deepest sympathy to a great man and photographer.

As Chair of the UNM Anthropology department, Jack was the major force in expanding the department during the late 1960s. He also succeeded in hiring scholars of national standing to join the department. UNM Anthropology would not be what it is today without his guidance and direction.
