John G. “JR” Raasch, age 62, of Hobart, passed away on October 20, 2024, in Merrillville. He was born on June 9, 1962, in Gary, Indiana, to the late Harold and Pauline Raasch. JR worked as a laborer in the steel industry and proudly served on the Ainsworth Deep River Volunteer Fire Department.
He is survived by his sister, Doris Segudovic; niece, Shirley Kosich; nephew, Robert Segudovic; and his long-time, loyal friend, Brian Majcher.
JR will be remembered as a calm, kind, and generous soul. His hospitality was unmatched—everyone who walked through his door was warmly greeted with a sincere, “Can I get you anything?” He found joy in life’s simple pleasures: fishing, gardening, and spending time outdoors. He made the best pickles and salsa, loved his tractors, and found peace walking through the woods at his home.
A friend to all, JR was always ready to lend a helping hand. He embraced the role of stepfather to Eugene (Crystal) Bilderback, son of his longtime companion Katy Bilderback, and was lovingly known as “Grandpa JR” to Vivian and Charlotte Bilderback. He taught Vivian how to drive the John Deere Gator and nurtured Charlotte’s love for gardening.
JR had a unique gift for making people feel seen and cared for—always making sure their favorite snacks were waiting for them. His love for children was especially evident at Easter, which he made extra magical every year.
Gentle and nurturing, JR led by example, teaching those around him through his unwavering kindness and quiet strength. He was deeply loved—and will be even more deeply missed.
A celebration of JR's life will take place Saturday, June 14, 2025 at 7676 Randolph St, Hobart, IN 46342 starting at 5:00 pm. Friends and family are invited and encouraged to attend. Cremation was entrusted to Rees Funeral Home, Hobart Chapel. For more information, please call (219) 942-2109. Online condolences may be shared with the family at www.reesfuneralhomes.com.
