John G's Obituary

John G Thomas Jr., age 69, of Laurel Hill, passed away peacefully on January 19, 2026. He was born on March 22, 1956, in Cullman, Alabama, the son of the late John G Thomas Sr. and Margie Nell Thompson.

John devoted more than 27 years of faithful service to Flowers Baking Company, a career he truly enjoyed. As an independent bread delivery driver, he took pride in his work, building relationships along his route and doing his job with consistency, integrity, and a strong work ethic—qualities that defined his life.

He was a devoted sports fan who loved NASCAR, especially cheering on his favorite driver, Mark Martin. John was equally passionate about Alabama football and its rich traditions, a love he gladly shared with family and friends. Saturdays in the fall were special times of fellowship, stories, and Crimson Tide pride.

One of John’s greatest joys was coaching Little League baseball for his two sons. Those seasons on the ball field were more than just games—they were opportunities for John to teach lessons about teamwork, discipline, encouragement, and sportsmanship. He loved watching his boys grow, learn, and compete, and he cherished the time spent alongside them, creating memories that would last a lifetime.

John also found peace and joy outdoors, enjoying fishing and shrimping whenever he had the opportunity. These quiet moments on the water reflected his steady nature and appreciation for God’s creation.

A man of deep and abiding faith, John served as a deacon at First Baptist Church in Malabar, Florida. His relationship with Jesus Christ anchored every part of his life. In the final year of his life, John read the Bible from cover to cover—an act that reflected not only his devotion but his desire to continually grow in his walk with the Lord. He did not merely read Scripture; he lived it daily through his kindness, humility, and love for others.

John was a devoted husband, father, grandfather, and great-grandfather. He is survived by his loving wife of 50 years, Shirley Thomas; his sons, Johnny Thomas and Lonnie Thomas; his sister, Lorena McQueen, and her husband, Danny; sister-in-law, Teresa Epperson (Keith), uncle, Joel Thompson; aunts, Lavandia Williams and Linda Robinson, his grandchildren, Dallas Creech, Marysa Everette, Curtis Thomas, and Ashley Thomas; and his great-grandchildren, Ellie, Elijah, Jackson, Miriah, and Ariyanna. His grandchildren and great-grandchildren knew him best as “Grandpa,” a name spoken with affection, love, and deep respect. John is also survived by abundance of extended loved ones including numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.

Graveside services for John G Thomas Jr. will be held Saturday, January 24, 2026, at 2:00 p.m. at Almarante Cemetery, with Mike McVay officiating.

John’s life was a testimony of steady faith, quiet strength, and unwavering love for his family. He leaves behind a legacy not only of memories, but of a life well lived—rooted in Christ and reflected in service to others.
