Not sure what to say?

It can be so hard to face the first year without your loved one, but the love of family and friends can carry you through.

Jack was an extraordinary human being. An outstanding lawyer and community leader, he was also a warm and caring person. His smile could light up a convention center. He enjoyed life and lived it to the full. He will be greatly missed.

John's Obituaries

John H. “Jack” Gherlein, 89, of Pepper Pike passed away on January 7, 2016. Beloved husband of Rachel (nee Mills) of 64 years, loving father of Ann Vaughn (Eric), John (Claudia) and the late Thomas, devoted grandfather of Benjamin Vaughn (Erin), Christopher Vaughn (Meredith), Matthew and the late John, great grandfather of Charlotte Elizabeth Vaughn and Maxwell Thomas Vaughn, and dear brother of Gene and Gerald (Joyce).  Jack was born in Warren, Ohio and enlisted in the U.S. Navy upon graduation from Warren G. Harding High School.  He graduated from Ohio Wesleyan University in 1948, where he served as President of the Phi Gamma Delta chapter, and received his law degree Order of the Coif, from Western Reserve Law School in 1951.  He began a long and distinguished career as a lawyer at Thompson Hine and Flory in 1951.  He became the firm’s first managing partner in 1988. Jack adored his family, was dedicated to his work at Thompson Hine, and over the course of more than 60 years was a proud Clevelander who was tremendously invested in civic affairs. His community service over the years included:  President of the Citizens League of Greater Cleveland; President of the Cleveland Bar Association; board member of Vocational Guidance Services, Recovery Resources, Martha Holden Jennings Foundation, and St. Luke’s Medical Center and the St. Luke’s Foundation; and leadership roles in United Way and the Visiting Committee of Case Western Reserve University School of Law. All who knew Jack appreciated his sense of humor, sharp wit, knack for storytelling, and love of musicals. All of this came together in the Court of Nisi Prius, where he achieved the status of Venerable Sergeant and was the recipient of the Silver Chevron Citation.  He was Judge of the Court for the 1980-1981 term.  Jack was a member of Pepper Pike Club, The Country Club, and Jonathan’s Landing in Jupiter, Florida, and he had been a long-time member of Mayfield Country Club and the Union Club.  The family prefers that those who wish make contributions in his name to Vocational Guidance Services, 2239 East 55th Street, Cleveland, Ohio 44103 or to the Martha Holden Jennings Foundation, The Halle Building, 1228 Euclid Ave., Suite 710, Cleveland, OH 44115.  A Memorial Service will be held on Monday, January 11th at 1 PM in The Church of the Saviour, 2537 Lee Rd, Cleveland, OH 44118.
