Greasy was one of the finest man I have ever known ...Its many years since I have had any contact with him ..but he worked with my father for many at the Gas Co. I will always remember so well . RIP Sir !

Mr. John Mercus "Greasy" Groves, Jr., age 87, of Rome, passed away Wednesday morning, March 4, 2015, at his residence.Mr. Groves was born in Lindale, GA on September 1, 1927, son of the late John Mercus Groves, Sr. and the late Annie Mae Wynn Groves. He was also preceded in death by his first wife and mother of his son, Margaret Louise Colston Groves, and by 2 brothers, Ralph Groves and Paul "Ed" Groves. Mr. Groves was a veteran of the United States Navy and served during World War II. Prior to his retirement, he was employed with Atlanta Gas Light for over 30 years. He was a member of Lindale United Methodist Church and the Rome Antique Bottle Club.Survivors include his wife, the former Jeanette Noles Ely, to whom he was married on August 3, 1997; a son, Tim Groves, Rome; 2 grandsons, Alex Groves, Concord, NC, and Whitman Groves, Annapolis, Maryland; 2 step-sons, Sammy Ely, and his wife, Nell, Taylorsville, and Lanny Ely, and his wife, Glenda, Rome; a brother, Jimmy Groves, Los Angeles, CA; 7 step-grandchildren, several step-great grandchildren, nieces and nephews also survive.Funeral services will be held on Saturday, March 7, 2015, at 3pm in the Chapel at Henderson & Sons Funeral Home, South Chapel, with the Rev. Bill Pardue and the Rev. Dennis Conway officiating. Interment will follow in Floyd Memory Gardens with the Brewster-Cleveland Post #86, American Legion Honor Guard extending military honors.The family will receive friends at Henderson & Sons Funeral Home, South Chapel, on Saturday from 1pm until the service hour. At other times, they may be contacted at their respective homes.Active and honorary pallbearers are requested to assemble at Henderson & Sons Funeral Home, South Chapel, on Saturday at 2:30pm and are as follows: Active: Jimmy Erwin, Chick Simmons, Gene Parker, Bill Peek, Joey Arnold, Jerry Mitchell, Gregg Swindle, Alex Groves, and Whitman Groves.
