John Malcolm Hartley, Sr., of Hoover, passed away peacefully in his home on Tuesday, March 21, 2017, at the age of 84. He was born on October 14, 1932, in Headland, AL. He graduated from Columbus High School (GA), then spent 4 years active duty in the Navy, 4 years in reserves while earning 2 degrees from Auburn University. Upon graduation from Auburn he worked many years with Newport News and Dry Dock Shipyard, where he was employed as an electrical engineer. Mr. Hartley moved to Birmingham in 1979 and was employed as Regional Sales Manager for Okonite Wire. He was also a loyal member of Shades Mountain Independent Church for 37 years where he served as an elder and led the Primetimers Seniors Group. Mr. Hartley is preceded in death by his parents, John Thomas and Louise Hand Hartley; and brother, O. Joe Hartley.He is survived by his wife of 58 years, Elaine Barber Hartley; sons, John M. Hartley, Jr. (Randi) and Kyle B. Hartley; and daughter, Jana Hartley McWilliams (Tommy). He is also survived by seven grandchildren, Morgan H. Revier, Tiffany Cox, Alicia Cox, Hunter Hartley, David Cox, Harrison Hartley and Jared Hartley, with one great-granddaughter, Amelia Jean Revier. In addition, he is survived by his younger sister, Madge Railey of Columbus, GA.The family will receive friends on Friday, March 24, 2017, at 12 PM at Shades Mountain Independent Church with the service to follow. The graveside service be at Jefferson Memorial Gardens, South in Hoover.In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to Shades Mountain Independent Church - Building Fund.
