John was always the kindest and most trustworthy colleague I knew at the City of Raleigh. His laugh was contagious, and his humor lit up the room wherever he went. In addition to being a singularly wonderful human, he was an outstanding fire chief, and raised the bar around here for first responders. He'll be missed!

Carol and the McGrath family: We are deeply saddened by John's death. Linda, Rachel and I have great memories of you all. From sharing many meals, doing various projects together and sharing laughs and tears. We remember coming up to see you all in your "new" house and the tour of Philadelphia!
We will remember John's character; his integrity, his passion, humor and his love for you all and his firefighters. I was happy and honored to be able to partner with him at the City of Raleigh....

0ur deepest condolences to Carol and the entire family. Many wonderful memories of the McGraths we have of our years on Outlook Ave to cherish.

Mrs Carol & McGrath family, I am deeply saddened about Chief McGrath's passing. I had the pleasure of working with Chief McGrath at the Raleigh FD serving as his Finance Officer. By far the best boss a southern guy could ask for, even though he never understood a chicken biscuit for breakfast! He taught me a lot about the fire department, & more importantly about life, doing things the right way, & the value of family. I wish you comfort during this time, he will be missed!

I loved Uncle John (Godfather). He was a force of a human being - for good, love and support. I will miss most the bond he had with my father; best friends since childhood. I love you Aunt Carol, Johnny, Joe, Jim and Alison and my thoughts and strength are with you.

Gail and I wish to express our deepest sympathies to John’s family. We enjoyed working with John while he was Chief at the City of Raleigh. John was a true professional in every sense of the word. His love for firefighting was obvious. Rest well old friend. Gail and Dale Crisp
