Hi John and Mark, I was very sorry to see the notice that your father has passed on. I would often see him on Saturday nights at the high school gym when he was the custodian for the St Josephs CYO basketball games and practices.He always took good care of us. He was always friendly and helpful anytime I talked to him. Those were great days for the St Josephs program with Bump as athletic director over the baseball and basketball teams. I remember coaching Mark on the Cadet basketball team...

I am deeply saddened to hear of John's death. We were old pals whenever we got together. Knowing I had no extended family, he treated me like a daughter. His years fighting in WWII were a great talking pointing point which I loved as much as I did. We talked politics, sports and subject most people run away from. But we loved it all the more. Mr. John Michael O’Leary, Sr., of Watertown and a former longtime Somerville resident, passed away on Tuesday, August 14, 2018, he was 91. Born and raised in Somerville he was the son of the late Michael and Hannah O’Leary.
A proud Army veteran, Mr. O’Leary served honorably during World War II. A longtime employee for the city of Somerville, he also served as a mayoral veteran’s liaison under Mayor Dorothy Kelly Gay and current Mayor Joseph Curtatone. A member of American Legion Post 447 Somerville for many years, he was also Past Commander. In recognition of John’s service to our nation and the city of Somerville, the corner of Merriam Street and Somerville Ave was dedicated in his honor.
John was the beloved husband of 52 years to the late Grace (DiBiase) O’Leary. Devoted father of John Michael O’Leary, Jr. and his wife Nancy of Watertown and Mark Francis O’Leary and his late wife Sandi of Rhode Island. Cherished “Pa” of Kelly McClelland and her husband Brian, Kevin O’Leary and his wife Kelley, Brendan and Connor O’Leary. Great-grandfather of Hattie McClelland and Owen and Grace O’Leary. Dear brother of the late Arthur, Robert, Cornelius “Buddy” and Catherine O’Leary. Brother in law of Betty O’Leary of Medford and uncle to many loving nieces and nephews. Devoted lifetime friend of the late Salvatore Uglietta.
Funeral Procession from the George L. Doherty Funeral Home, 855 Broadway (Powder House Sq.) Somerville on Tuesday at 10AM followed by a Funeral Mass celebrated in St. Catherine of Genoa Church, 179 Summer St. Somerville at 11AM. Relatives and friends invited to attend. Calling Hours Monday 4pm – 8pm. Interment Puritan Lawn Cemetery, Peabody. In lieu of flowers donations in his name can be made to the National PKU Alliance, PO Box 1872, Eau Claire, WI 54702.
