Not sure what to say?

John was a dear and longtime friend. We met on the docks in Newport more than 30 years ago and became friends immediately.
He had a love for his family, his community and his music.

It is ironic that today, just by chance I met John’’s daughter Mikayla on the exact same spot I met John 30 years ago. We had never met before and immediately we had a personal connection just like with her Dad.
I was told of his passing by her and we both shared memories about this truly...

I was John's band director at North Country. He also played in our 15-piece big band, the Moonlighters. He was a great talent and wonderful human being. I am so, so sorry for your loss.

I never had the honor of knowing John personally, but I know his son Evan, and that tells me all I need to know about the kind of man he was. My thoughts are with the family during this time.

I have many memories of Cousin John and the family growing up in Vermont and coming to visit on weekends or we would go visit them. John and Carl and I would always have a great time hanging out and exploring the world around us. I will especially miss his facebook posts playing his music. RIP Cousin

I only met John twice, and his innate kindness was obvious. We were adjacent vendors at a local event, and his gift for visiting with a stranger made you feel like he was an old classmate. Prayers for strength for his family going forward.

John Royer has been our “insurance man” for many years. Always friendly and very helpful. Good about returning calls and mailing our receipts. Very professional with a personal touch. Our sympathy goes out to all his family and friends. Sincerely, Jerry and MaDonna Guillette

Played in a band with John years ago and he was probably the most talented musician I ever played with. The world will be a little lesser place without him here. Rest in peace John. Thanks for the memories.

Sincere Condolences to all the family.

This is shocking and unexpected news. John was one of my closest friends, and I will miss his friendship. My thoughts are with the family. I am here if I can be of any help.

Obituary

John's Obituary

John Russell Royer, 63, of Newport, Vermont, passed away on May 21, 2025, at his home. Born to the late Roland and Beverly Royer, John was known for his infectious humor, kind heart, and ability to make others laugh. He had a special way of lighting up any room and touched the lives of everyone he met.

He is survived by his children, Evan, Mickayla, and their mother Corinne Clowes as well as Juliana Royer, step-children Ryan and Evan Brewster, and their mother Denise Royer; his brother Carl Royer and wife Melissa, along with nieces and extended family. They all shared John’s love for music, nature, community, and golf.

John graduated from North Country Union High School in 1980 and later made his home in Westmore, where he enjoyed hiking Mt. Pisgah with his dogs and family. He returned to Newport to establish Integrity Solutions in 2008, building a successful insurance business based on trust and personalized care. Over 16 years, he developed a network of loyal clients who became friends and neighbors.

Music was a lifelong passion for John, beginning at age eight when he joined his father’s big band as a drummer. He played with local bands like FootLoose and collaborated on community events. A versatile musician, John shared his talents on guitar, piano, and saxophone at local restaurants and gatherings. He also loved golf, often spending time on the course with friends and family.

Calling hours will be held at Curtis-Britch & Bouffard Funeral Home, 4670 Darling Hill Rd., Newport, VT, on Thursday, May 29, from 5:00 to 8:00 PM. A celebration of life will take place later in the year.

In lieu of flowers, the family is establishing a non-profit fund in John’s honor to support music education. John’s legacy will continue through the scholarships and resources provided to future generations of music students.  On-line condolences are welcome at curtis-britch.com.   Arrangements are entrusted to the care of Curtis-Britch & Bouffard Funeral Home & Cremation Service, locally family owned and operated.
