John F. Schmidt, 86, of Grinnell, died Sunday, March 15, 2026, at his home with his family by his side. As per his wishes, he was cremated.
John was born on March 26, 1939, the son of George and Frances Schmidt, in Grinnell. He graduated from Grinnell High School and went right to work. On September 5, 1959, he married Mary Moyer in Grinnell. He was employed at Donaldson’s for over 37 years. John was a man of his word and knew the value of hard work. While he worked at Donaldson’s he also farmed. He loved to farm and even the waterways were in pristine condition.
John will be remembered by his wife, Mary, of Grinnell; sons, Kevin (Liz) Schmidt of Indiana and Kraig Schmidt of Grinnell; grandchildren, Kristi and Michael; and two brothers, Jim (Carol) Schmidt and Jack Schmidt, all of Grinnell.
He was preceded in death by his parents; and one brother, Joe Schmidt.
The family would like to thank Home Instead and Suncrest Hospice for caring for not only John, but his family.
