John's Obituary

John Charles Turley, age 78, of Cottonwood Heights, Utah, passed away on November 15, 2025.

Born on May 1, 1947, in Twin Falls, Idaho, John was the beloved son of Gifford and Catherine Turley. In his younger days, John loved swimming, motorcycles, and was an avid lover of movies. He will be remembered not only for his kindness and strength, but also for his joyful spirit. John loved telling jokes and making others laugh, and he had a great passion for cooking, experimenting with new recipes, and traveling. He especially loved being near the ocean on vacations, where he felt peace and happiness surrounded by the waves. A lifelong learner, John enjoyed studying and learning history and science through books and documentaries, always eager to deepen his knowledge and share fascinating facts with others.

From 1966 to 1970, John proudly served in the U.S. Navy, stationed in San Diego and Guam. During his service, he was assigned to the USS Sperry and the USS Proteus. He was honorably discharged, carrying with him a deep sense of duty, pride, and lifelong friendships formed during his time in the Navy.

After serving in the Navy, John worked at the Morton Salt Plant and later at Garrett Freight Lines, where he made many friends and was known for his hard work and camaraderie.

John is survived by his son, Brett Turley; his daughter and son-in-law, Allison and Tyler Symes; his daughter and son-in-law, Melissa and Dan Dempsey; his grandchildren, Caden Symes, Logan Symes, Liam Symes, Carter Symes, and Dawson Dempsey; and former wife, Nancy Turley Mullen.

John is preceded in death by his father Gifford Turley, mother Catherine Turley, and his brother James (Jim) Turley.

He will be deeply missed by his family, friends, and all who had the privilege of knowing him. His memory will live on in the laughter he inspired, the meals he shared, and the love he gave so freely.

A graveside service will be held on Tuesday, November 25, 2025, at 12:00 p.m. at South Jordan Cemetery.
