Lafayette, LA ----- A Mass of Christian Burial for Joseph Alexander “Bugga” Bonnet Jr., 88, will be held on Friday, November 21, 2025 at 11:00 AM at St. Anthony Catholic Church, 600 Madeline Avenue, Lafayette, LA.Father Lambertus Lein will be celebrant of funeral mass.Interment will follow at Assumption Catholic Cemetery in Carencro, LA.Visitation will begin at 8:00 AM on Friday at the church and will conclude at the time of services. The rosary will be recited at 9:30 AM.Joseph Alexander “Bugga” Bonnet Jr., 88, of Lafayette and Carencro, Louisiana, peacefully passed away on November 12, 2025, surrounded by loved ones. Born on June 6, 1937, in Carencro, Louisiana, to the late Elita Broussard and Joseph Alexander Bonnet Sr., he was a beloved son, brother, father, uncle, and friend, known for his hard work, innovation, and entrepreneurial spirit.Affectionately known as “Bugga,” he was a proud entrepreneur and visionary trailblazer in his community—a true businessman in every sense of the word. Mr. Bonnet built a legacy rooted in faith, family, and perseverance. His entrepreneurial journey began alongside his older brother, Carron “T-Quin” Bonnet, with whom he purchased property and opened a nightclub with an adjoining home—creating one of Lafayette’s earliest Black-owned entertainment venues.Over the years, Mr. Bonnet owned, leased, and managed several grocery stores—two of which proudly carried the family name, Bonnet’s Grocery. He expanded into tree and fence work, founding Lafayette Tree & Fence Company, Acme Tree & Fence, and other ventures that reached far beyond Lafayette Parish. Through these businesses, he employed and mentored many along the way. With the heart of an inventor and craftsman, he designed tools, created new techniques, and passed his knowledge down to others—helping countless people find work and stability through his enterprises.His presence in the community drew family and friends alike. It was not uncommon to find him sitting beneath his favorite oak tree with a cigar and a beer in hand, reflecting on life, sharing stories, and greeting (or fussing with) passersby. To his family, “Bugga” was the pillar of wisdom and humor, taking joy in watching his children and grandchildren grow, and reminding them to stay rooted in strength, faith, and determination.He believed deeply in community service, resilience, and perseverance. His laughter, generosity, and love for people touched lives across Lafayette’s neighborhoods and beyond.Joseph is survived by his devoted wife of 67 years, Anna Lubertha Bonnet, who remained by his side with love and care until his transition; his children, Trincella Bonnet, Rebecca Bonnet Batiste, Sandy Bonnet, Joseph Randall Bonnet, and Donald James Bonnet; 14 grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren; and his siblings, Eva Bonnet Kleinpeter (Milton), Virgie Bonnet, and Doris Jean Bonnet Fitzgerald (Clyde), along with a host of nieces, nephews, and friends.He was preceded in death by his son, Joseph Gregory “Whitey” Bonnet; his parents, Elita and Joseph Alexander “Bill” Bonnet Sr.; and his siblings, Albertha Bonnet Davis, Carron “T-Quin” Bonnet, Ferris Bonnet, Felton “Boy” Bonnet, Margaret “YaYo” Bonnet Arceneaux, and Mary Alice Bonnet.View the obituary and sign the guest book online at www.carneyfuneralhome.netProfessional services entrusted Carney Funeral Home, 602 North Pierce Street, Lafayette, LA, (337) 235-9789, is in charge of arrangements.
