Joseph's Obituary

Joseph Leonard Caton, Jr., 90, of Newman, California, passed away peacefully at home on July 13, 2025, surrounded by his loving family. He was born in Newman on December 27, 1934, to Joe and Maria Caton.

Joe is preceded in death by his son, Kenneth L. Caton; sisters, Mary Caton, Ann Maloney, Rose Caton and brother, Manuel Caton.

Joe’s family was his most cherished legacy. He is survived by his wife of 67 years, Mary; sister, Elaine Conner (Larry); sons, Joseph M. (Mary) and Robert (Nancy); daughter, Marie Beach (Norman). His grandchildren and great-grandchildren affectionately called him “papa.” They include: Sera Caton (Jeff Hayman), Caroline Purtill (Evan), Eric Caton (Alyssa), Mary Caton, Ann Caton, Trevor Beach, Jacob Beach (Camille), Madison Beach. His great-grandchildren include: Austin, Blake, Caley, Harrison, Caton, Everett, Theodore, Joey, Addilyn, Madison and Luke.

Joe was known for his kind heart and many acts of service to others. He graduated from Orestimba High School in 1953. He attended Modesto Junior College and was extremely proud of his service in the United States Army.  

Joe spent his life in the agricultural industry. He was raised on his family’s dairy farm, managed the Simon Newman Feed Store, Merced Milling and Associated Feed Company. He served on the board of directors and as president of San Joaquin Dairymen’s Association when he co-owned the Caton and Lopes Dairy. He also was president of the Newman FDES and served on their board for many years.

A Visitation will be held on July 24, 2025, from 5:00 - 6:00 pm at St. Joachim’s Catholic Church, Newman, with a Rosary to follow at 6:00 pm. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on July 25, 2025, at 10:00 am at St. Joachim’s Catholic Church with interment to follow at Hills Ferry Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to TOSCA (The Orestimba Scholarship Community Association) at P.O. Box 18, Newman, California, 95360.
