Joseph Mathew Davis was born on May 18, 1959, at Letterman Army Hospital in San Francisco, California to the late Thelma Ree Hilliard Davis and Joseph Matthew Davis.
Joseph accepted Christ at an early age and attended Vacation Bible School every summer, along with his siblings in Oakland, California. The family moved to Hayward California where Joseph grew up. Joseph learned to swim at a young age, since the family home had a swimming pool.
Joseph attended Mt. Eden High School and was part of the wrestling team. He also participated in Karate and loved to ride horses. He joined the U.S. Army right after high school and consequently received an honorable discharge.
Joseph moved to Memphis Tennessee to be close to Mother Dorothy and two of his sisters, Geraldine and Edna. Throughout his life, he traveled back and forth to Oakland and Hayward, California to set up his home. In the past year he went to Las Vegas to set up residence, but once again he became home sick and went back to Memphis where he lived out his life.
Joseph was a kind, independent, and caring person with a heart of gold.
Joseph was preceded home by his stepmothers Dorothy Laverne Clark, Esther Davis, aunt Katherine Fleming, uncle Amuel Hilliard, sisters Renee Louise Middleton and Edna Mae Elrod.
Joseph leaves to cherish his memories, his father Joseph Matthew Davis (Lillian Davis) of Lima, Ohio, Aunt Louise Goosby of Morrow, Georgia, sisters Joann Brown (Wendell Brown) of Patterson, California, Violet Morgan of Lewisville, Texas, Jacqueline Thomas (Joel Thomas) of Atwater, California, Geraldine Malbrough of Memphis, Tennessee, and Peggy Williams (Richard Williams) Washington, DC.
He is also survived by his nephews Deshane Middleton, Lenzy Wash, Theodis Daniels, Andre White, Jenard Thomas, and Wendell Brown.
His nieces Tonya Wash, Lanise Jamerson, Amber Gause, Evelyn Harrison, Ebony Edwards, Myisha White, Tiffany Collins, Sade Thomas. Others to cherish his memories includes extended family great nephews, great nieces, cousins, and friends.
God has once again stopped by the garden of life to add to his heavenly bouquet. An active life came to a close on Friday February 20, 2026, when Joseph Matthew Davis was called home.
