Joseph "Joe"'s Obituary

Joseph (Joe) Albert Philyaw, age 74, of Jacksonville, Florida, and New Boston, Texas, passed away May 28, 2025, at St. Vincent's Riverside Hospice in Jacksonville, Florida. Joe was born on January 17, 1951, in Lewisville, Arkansas, to Thomas and Wilma Philyaw. He grew up in Lewisville and spent his early adult life there before moving to Florida in 1973. Joe was a Christian member of Calvary Baptist in Middleburg, Florida, where he had many friends and business partners. He enjoyed reading the Bible and studying the Word. Joe was a man of many interests. Before retiring, Joseph drove semi-trucks for several different companies. For almost ten years, he made and sold woodcrafts and furniture in Canton, Texas, under Philyaw Sales. His love of a "good deal" led him to buying and selling vehicles, trailers, and lawnmowers, which eventually led to him running his own lawn service company. Joe even bought and sold airplanes. Joe was a hard worker, but he also liked to have fun. He loved flying and taking friends and relatives out for what he called "hundred-dollar hamburgers". He enjoyed fishing and treasured his fishing trips with family and friends. Joe loved to laugh and was always quick with a joke or a story that left his listeners laughing. He was always willing to lend a hand to someone in need, which made him a beloved friend to many and even a surrogate father figure for some. Joe was also a member of the Freemasons and enjoyed his time with his fellow Masons.

Joe was preceded in death by his parents, Thomas Oneal and Wilma Philyaw, his son Joseph Heath Philyaw, his sister Frances Nicholas, and his brothers Thomas Caston Philyaw and Scott Philyaw.

Joseph is survived by his sister Dorcas Omega Gray (and Ronald), brother John Philyaw (and Sherry), several cousins, several nieces and nephews, his two sons, Gregory Eugene Philyaw (and Wendy) and Thomas ONeal Philyaw. Also, three granddaughters, Natalee Ainsworth, Brittany Martin, and Destiny Mason. And one great-grandson, Cameron James Mason.

A graveside memorial service will be held at Wilson Cemetery in Lewisville, Arkansas (arranged by A.O. Smith of Stamps, AR) on July 9, 2025, at 10:00 am.
