1st Sgt. Joseph J. Keener, Jr. USMC (Ret) 84 had his last "Fire Fight" with cancer and died Sunday at his home, peacefully with his wife Joan by his side. Born in Hazelton Pa. and raised in Stockton NJ Joe had lived in Solebury for the past 2 ½ years. Soon after graduating from Lambertville High School in 1948 he enlisted in the United State Marine Corps. During his 22 years of service of service he fought in the Korean and Vietnam Wars earning him medals for valor and bravery. After retiring from the Corps in 1971, he continued serving his community as a Hunterdon County Detective with the Prosecutors Office in Flemington. After seven years he decided to resign because of ongoing military disabilities. Joe was a life member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post # 8390 in Sergeantsville. Son of the late Joseph J. Keener, Sr. and Cristina Errico Keener, he is survived by his wife Joan Wootters Keener, one sister Marie Cook of Philadelphia, one brother Charles Keener. Private funeral services with full military honors will be held graveside at the Sandy Ridge Cemetery, Stockton, under the direction of the Garefino Funeral Home, 12 N. Franklin St. in Lambertville. In lieu of flowers memorial contributions may be made to Doylestown Hospice, c/o Doylestown Hospital, 595 W. State St. Doylestown Pa., 18901.
