Joseph's Obituaries

Mr. Joseph Johnny Suber, Sr. passed away on Monday, February 20, 2017 in Petersburg, VA.  He was born in Spartanburg, SC, on January 12, 1929 to the late John Wesley Suber, Jr. and Maybelle Landrum Suber. He was educated and grew up in and around Spartanburg, SC, and Asheville, NC.  At the age of 16, he enlisted in the United States Army where he served for three years followed by a twenty-three year stint in the United States Air Force, During his military service, he earned many awards for meritorious and selfless service. After military retirement in 1971, he worked for twenty years with Allied Chemical Corporation (now Honeywell), retiring yet again in 1991. On April 24, 2010, he became one of Jehovah's Witnesses symbolizing his dedication through water baptism. He has experienced many blessings and joys over the years in Jehovah's service.A devoted husband, father and grandfather, he was known for his love of children, humor, easy going personality and just plain decency.  His personal mantra was to treat everyone as a VIP (a Very Important Person). He touched many lives with his quiet wisdom, integrity and willingness to always put others before himself.  Joseph immersed himself in caring for his family and truly enjoyed the simpler things in life. Whether you knew him as Joe, Dad, Granddad, Grandpa, Uncle Joe, or just Mr. Suber, your life was richer for having shared in his.He was preceded in death by his beloved wife, the late Viola Dugger Suber; a son, William Clifton Suber; one grandson, Andre Green; his brother, Wilbert Sherman Suber and sister, Bennie Mae Splawn. He leaves to cherish his memory, seven children, Annette Clarke (Davey), Denise Suber Harrrison (Eric), Joseph Johnny Suber, Jr., Sharon Ann Chatman, Patricia Diane Suber, Yvette Marie Bailey and Andre Chatman; twenty-three grandchildren; thirty great grandchildren; three great great grandchildren; two sisters, Ruth Dean Thomas and Sarah Lorine Gore; one brother-in-law, Charles Adam Dugger, Sr., and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, relatives and friends.We would especially like to thank his primary caregivers, son, Joseph Jr.; daughter, Patricia and grandson, Conrad Jr. "CJ." We also thank Carlton Edwards, Juanita Jennifer, Jaimie Smith, Paulette Hill, as well as the staffs of All About Care and Care Advantage. Additionally, several years ago, Hospice of Virginia provided outstanding care resulting in his being discharged from hospice care.

Services for Mr. Joseph J. Suber, Sr. will be held 3:00 P.M., Saturday, February 25, 2017 at the Kingdom Hall of Jehovah Witnesses, 13301 Harrowgate Road, Chester, Va., by Brother Broadus Pettiford.

 

The family will receive friends at the residence of his daughter, Patricia, at 1847 Buckner Street, Petersburg, VA, on Thursday, February 23, 2017 at 6:00 P.M.  The family will also assemble 2:00 P.M. the day of the service at the residence of Patricia.
