Joyce Brenda Dougherty, 89, died Friday, September 26, 2025. Born in Brooklyn, New York, she worked on the New York Stock Exchange as a teletype operator. She had been a Hampton resident since 1984 where she attended St. Joseph Catholic Church. She worked as an ESL teacher for the Norfolk Public School system and was often a substitute teacher for Hampton City Schools.
As a military wife of an Army Corps of Engineers officer, they traveled extensively to duty stations throughout the United States and overseas. Joyce herself served in the Women’s Army Corps in New York City.
Joyce’s father, Frederick Brendan Callanan, was from St. John's, Newfoundland, where he worked as a telegraph operator. He came to the US to work for the Commercial Cable Company in New York City. Joyce had recently reestablished contact with relatives in Newfoundland who continue to reside there. Joyce’s mother, Cecelia, was from Brooklyn, New York where their large family owned a bicycle shop which became one of the first automobile repair shops in Brooklyn, New York.
Preceded in death by her husband, LTC George J. Dougherty, her parents, Cecelia and Frederick Callanan, her sister, Cecelia Callanan, father-in-law George John Dougherty and a daughter-in-law, Krisztina Hera; survivors include her children, George Michael Dougherty and wife, Vanesa Sanchez, James Brian Dougherty, Daniel Patrick Dougherty, and Doreen Marie Dougherty; her grandchildren, Alexander, Benjamin, and Christopher; her sister-in-law, Marie Rex; three nieces, Patricia, Kathleen, and Susan; and three nephews, Keith, Patrick, and Thomas.
The family will receive friends from 5-6 pm Friday, October 3, 2025, at R. Hayden Smith Funeral Home. Joyce will be laid to rest with George in Arlington National Cemetery at a later date.
