”…for the joy of the LORD is your strength.” – Nehemiah 8:10
With deep sorrow and abiding love, we celebrate the life and legacy of Judith Barnes Daughtery, affectionately known as Judy, who peacefully transitioned from this life on July 14, 2025, at the age of 85 in her hometown of Suffolk, Virginia.
Born on May 17, 1940, in Suffolk to the late William J. Barnes, Sr. and Annie Belle Baker Barnes, Judy was a radiant spirit whose life reflected grace, strength, and unwavering faith. She accepted Christ at an early age and lived out her beliefs through quiet service and steadfast devotion. As a lifelong member of Bethlehem Christian Church, she lovingly served as the Sunday School Treasurer for many years. In recognition of her faithful commitment, the church honored her with a special appreciation service in March 2008—a testament to the impact she made within her spiritual community.
Judy was a proud graduate of Booker T. Washington High School, class of 1958, where she excelled both in the classroom and on the basketball court, and was also a talented member of the school band. Her love for music and education continued at Virginia State College (Norfolk Division)—now Norfolk State University—where she remained an active band member and earned her degree in 1963.
She began her career as a physical education teacher in Clarksville, Virginia, shaping young minds for six meaningful years. In 1972, she returned to Suffolk and began her dedicated tenure at the Virginia Employment Commission, officially starting on March 6, 1972. For 36 years, Judy served her community with professionalism, integrity, and heart—retiring in 2008 after a distinguished career that left a lasting impression on all who knew her.
Beyond her professional and spiritual life, Judy was known for her vibrant personality and many passions. She found joy in bowling, playing Scrabble, and watching game shows and home renovation programs. A devoted member of her local Civic League, she believed in the power of community and connection. Among her favorite pastimes was watching sports—especially football—a love she proudly shared with her daughter, Monique. Together, they created cherished memories, one play at a time.
Above all, Judy was a woman devoted to her family. She was a pillar of love, guidance, and unwavering support. Her memory lives on through her beloved daughter, Monique Barnes; her loving sister, Roberta Barnes; nieces Crystal Stewart and Minerva Barnes Seymore (James); nephews Victor Stewart, William J. Barnes III, Mujahud Barnes, and Karl Daughtrey (Betty); as well as a host of extended family members and dear friends who were touched by her kindness and light.
She was preceded in death by her loving husband of 43 years, James Thomas Daughtery, Jr.; her parents; and her brother, William J. Barnes.
Judy’s legacy is one of faith, family, and quiet strength. Her life was a beautiful testament to service, love, and resilience. She will be deeply missed, but her spirit will continue to inspire all who knew and loved her.
“Well done, good and faithful servant.” – Matthew 25:23
