Barkley family- please know you have my deepest sympathy as you say goodbye to your wonderful mother. June was a very special friend to me. She accepted me early on when I came to Hansford county and made me feel welcome. But then, that’s the way she was, right? She was God’s love personified. She was the fruit of the Spirit personified. Her smile lit up the room and your heart. I can still picture her coming into the many funerals she attended over the years, and turning on that...

June Jackson Barkley, 95, passed away peacefully on April 10, 2025. The fifth of nine children, she was born on July 19, 1929, to Claude and Bessie Jackson at their farmstead southeast of Spearman, Texas. June grew up during The Great Depression on the family farm and lived her entire life in Hansford County, graduating from Spearman High School in 1946. Later that same year she met and soon married Dayton Barkley. They made their lifelong home in Gruver, Texas where they raised their four children.
June was the perfect balance of grace and elegance blended with strength and determination. She had a smile that radiated warmth and light, and a twinkle in her eye that continued to shine bright even after losing her eyesight over twenty years ago. Somehow, she managed to always be impeccably dressed and accessorized despite her inability to see. She was a constant optimist, never complaining through life’s hardships, but exemplifying the advice she always gave her kids and grandkids……“We just have to make the most with what we have.”
June loved her family deeply and found no greater joy than through nurturing and caring for them. She was known for her amazing cooking skills which she proudly shared with everyone. Even in her later years, she was thrilled to be able to host the entire family, serving delicious meals prepared in her small kitchen. She never hesitated to share her recipes, but she had a special knack that nobody seemed to be able to replicate.
Left to treasure her memory are her four children: Rick Barkley and wife, Kathy of Gruver, Dave Barkley and wife, Regina of Amarillo, Julie Sledge and husband, Randy of Coppell, and Callie Borger and husband, Larry of Amarillo. She was lovingly known as Muffy to 15 grandchildren: Cody Barkley (Jessica), Bailey Barkley (Randa), Kyler Barkley (Camille), Hutch Reed (Megan), Madeline Schenk (Jeremy), Kailee Reed, Lacy Anderson (John), Lindsay Brooks (Charles), Whitt Barkley (Katie), Tanner Sledge (Emily), Tate Sledge (Evelyn), Trey Sledge (Morgan), Dayton Borger (Alyssa), Neely Cox (Casey), and Blake Borger (Chloe). She was also blessed with 22 great grandchildren whom she adored. She is survived by one brother, George Jackson and wife Scarlett of Spearman as well as numerous nieces, nephews, cousins and other family members. Additionally, she leaves behind many faithful and loyal friends who were a huge part of her life. She is preceded in death by the love of her life and husband of 39 years, Dayton, her parents and seven siblings.
June’s life was a testimony of her love for God. It was her unwavering faith that guided her through her beautiful life right until the end. That faith and love live on in all who knew her.
A Memorial Service will be held on Monday, April 14 at 1:00 at the Gruver Methodist Church. A family graveside service will be held at 11:00 at the Gruver Cemetery. If desired, donations in June Barkley’s memory may be made to Gruver Methodist Church or the Gruver Cemetery Association.
