June Ann Brunell, 81, of Mercer, Wisconsin, passed away peacefully at home with her family at her side on Thursday, August 21, 2025, and under the care of Aspirus Home Health & Hospice.
June was born on July 29, 1944, in Tomahawk, Wisconsin, to LaVern and Marion (Laha) Gerlach. She was raised in Mercer, where she attended Mercer public school and was a 1962 graduate of Mercer High School. June was united in marriage to Bruce Joseph Brunell, her high school sweetheart, on August 3, 1963. The couple has lived in Mercer for the past forty-five years. They just celebrated their sixty-second year of marriage.
June owned and operated June’s Place Tavern located in Mercer from 1988 until 1995. The tavern had been in her family for many years. She was employed at the Great Northern Hotel and had been employed by many of the area restaurants.
She was an EMT volunteer for many years with the Mercer Fire Department. She was also very active with the Mercer Lioness Club, holding many officer positions, including being a past President, and later was a member of the Mercer Lions Club.
She was a member of Faith Lutheran Church, where she participated as a fill-in organist and a Catechism Teacher.
June enjoyed horses, along with her dogs and cats. She also had been a member of a pool league. June loved her family, especially her grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and foster children.
Surviving is her loving husband, Bruce, five children, Karl Brunell of Mercer, Karen (Mark Trapp) Benck of Minocqua, Ken (Tina) Brunell of Arbor Vitae, Keith (Vicki) Brunell of Becker, Minnesota, and Kevin (Shirley Brunell of Mercer, fifteen grandchildren, and eleven great-grandchildren. Also surviving are nieces, nephews, and other relatives and friends.
She is preceded in death by her parents and by a grandson, Shawn Spencer.
The visitation for June will be held on Saturday, September 13, 2025, at Faith Lutheran Church, located at 2701 Kichaks Landing, Mercer, Wisconsin. Visitation from 9:30 AM until the 10:00 AM Memorial Service. Pastor Brian Liermann will officiate.
