Obituary

Karen's Obituary

Karen Fay Slater of Davison, age 84, died Friday October 31, 2025, at her residence surrounded by her loving family. Honoring her wishes, cremation has taken place and no public service will be held.

Karen was born on August 28, 1941 in Flint, Michigan, daughter of the late Everett and Anna Carter. She resided in the Davison area for the last sixty plus years. She was joined in marriage to John Slater in 1961 and he preceded her in death in 2019 after 58 years of marriage. Karen was a proud Kearsley High School and Mott Community College graduate. She was a registered nurse who specialized in oncology and dedicated many years to the American Cancer Society and founded the I Can Cope Support group for cancer patients and their families. Karen had a green thumb and enjoyed gardening so much that she earned her Master Gardening degree from Michigan State University. She was incredibly talented and could re-create anything she saw from sewing, crocheting to painting. Karen had a love of animals from an early age and raised chickens and later in life, had her own petting zoo with a menagerie of animals including cats, dogs, fish, birds, chickens, ducks, goats and pigs. Karen had a zest for life and was adventuresome and was only a few hours short of her private pilot’s license. She went back to college after retirement and took Criminology courses as she wanted to be a CSI detective. At the age of 70, she went skydiving. She even decided she would learn to play the piano and made her best friend, Judy Bell join her and created t-shirts with “Seniors in Training” to wear during their recitals. Karen was always known for a good practical joke and would jump scare everyone. Karen will be extremely missed for her caring nature and for the joy and happiness she brought to her family and others.

She leaves to cherish in her memory her children: Kyle “Bob” and wife Tammy Slater, Steven and wife Melissa Slater, and Angela Brown. She also leaves her six loving grandchildren: Katelynn (Evan Lilley), Karlee (Erik) Tyree, Tyler, Klaire, John Brown and Jordyn; great granddaughter Ryan; sisters: Sharron (Clay) Hawkins, Loretta (Mark) Liell, Sara (Gary) Myers; sister-in-law Pam Carter and a host of extended family and friends. She was preceded in death by her parents, son-in-law Douglas Brown and brothers Max and John Carter.
