Larry Joe Eklund, 88, of Wichita, Kansas, passed away peacefully on March 10, 2026, with his children by his side.He was born on September 15, 1937 in Manhattan, Kansas, the son of the late Joe and Marguerite Eklund.Larry earned a degree in Civil Engineering from the University of Kansas and was recruited out of college by Los Angeles Country in 1960 to build their rapidly growing highway systems. After 18 months on the West Coast, he returned to Kansas to work for the Martin K Eby Construction Company, where he spent the next 39 years building infrastructure projects like bridges and locks and dams. While Wichita was his home, his career led to several relocations throughout the country, most notably Alexandria, Louisiana.Larry was a devoted family man; infamous for using his entire annual vacation time to take his family on long car trips across the country to visit various family members and local attractions. He also created a backyard oasis for his children and their friends, along with keeping an immaculate lawn and garden (his tomatoes were his pride and joy!) He enjoyed hunting quail and hosting dinner and card parties with his friends. He was a lifelong fan of local sports teams, notably KU basketball and football as well as the Kansas City Chiefs and Royals. Larry’s other passion was dining out with his family and friends, always eager to try out new restaurants and cuisines.He is survived by his wife of 63 years, Barbara Eklund of Olathe, Kansas; two children, Karen Eklund of Olathe, Kansas, Brian (Jane) Eklund of Seattle, Washington; one sister, Sharon Harry of Topeka, Kansas; one spoiled Goldendoddle, Daisy along with many other family and friends who will sadly miss him.At the family’s request there will be no service. In lieu of flowers memorial contributions be made in Larry’s memory to Good Shepherd Hospice, 7829 E. Rockhill St. #403, Wichita, KS 67206.
