Larry Keith Price
July 21, 1956 – March 12, 2018
A native of Detroit Michigan, Larry Keith Price was born July 21, 1956 to the late Norma Lee and Nathaniel Price. Larry attended Keidan Elementary School where he began playing basketball at the local afterschool boys and girls club. He advanced to Winterhalter Junior High and graduated from McKenzie High School. At McKenzie, Larry was an All-Star basketball player, which led to a full scholarship to the University of Arkansas.
In 1977, Larry moved to Fresno, California to be closer to his Father. He played basketball and graduated from West Hills College in Coalinga, California. After graduation, he began a career at Dow Chemical Company. He transitioned to Mission Foods, where the owner paid for Larry to complete his B.S. degree at National College, majoring in interdisciplinary studies. During this time, Larry began to referee local basketball games and coaching basketball.
Larry relocated to Sacramento California in 1995 to pursue a career at the Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation as a Correctional Officer at Folsom State Prison.
Shortly after moving to Sacramento he found his Christian Family in Genesis. He had a strong love for his church. He went through the Deacon in training program in 2015. He was proud and welcome others to visit his church.
In 2001, he promoted to a Parole Agent position in Stockton, California. During this time, he started coaching AAU Girls Basketball and served as the head coach of the River City Hoopsters. The River City Hoopsters was a team to be reckoned with throughout the nation. Larry’s notable work was demonstrated not only on the court, but in his successful efforts in securing scholarships for over 150 athletes to attend college.
In 2002, while Larry was watching his son play basketball at Cosumnes River College, Cindy was there watching her nephew play in the same game. Larry and Cindy spotted each other in the crowd, and it was love at first sight. Their relationship was always about love and basketball. After a long-committed relationship, Larry Keith Price and Cynthia Lorretta Brooks married on December 3, 2010 (on the 8th Anniversary of their first meeting). As best friends and lovers for life, Larry and Cindy joined together a beautiful blended family consisting of children: Antwan, Marcus, Saundra, Chanel, Brooke, and Justin.
In 2006, Larry began his career coaching girls’ basketball at Florin High School. Larry was a two-time recipient of the prestigious Sacramento Bee Coach of the Year award. In last five years of his career at Florin High, Larry’s “Cinderella Story” turned the team around from the bottom bracket to the top contending team in the Metro league, making it to the Playoffs every year.
In 2015, Larry began coaching at Elk Grove High School and in his first year, he received his highest achievement by leading the girls’ team to a victory as Northern Regional Nor Cal Champions Division II, and 1st runner up in the California State Championship. Larry retired from the State of California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation in December 2016 after 21 years of service.
While battling various health issues, Larry’s love of the game and commitment enabled him to take the 2017 Elk Grove High School’s Girl Basketball team to the playoffs. Larry is proceeded in death by his loving parents Norma Lee and Nathaniel Price. Three siblings Loretta Hurst, Lonnie (Jeannie) Lowery, and Nathaniel Ronnie Price Jr. (Dorothy).
