LaVerne S. Tornow Born: February 24, 1943 Died: July 3, 2025 LaVerne S. Tornow, 82 formerly of Tampico, died Thursday July 3, 2025 at Morningside of Sterling. He was born on February 24, 1943 in Tampico, the son of Benjamin and Marie (Gerdes) Tornow. He married Sharon A. Murray on February 24, 1963 in Yorktown. She died February 29, 2020. LaVerne was employed for 35 years as elevator manager for Cady Grain and later CGB before retiring in 2010. He was a member of New Life Lutheran Church. LaVerne was a 40 year member of the Tampico Volunteer Fire Department; had served for Tampico Village Board for 10 years; on the former Tampico School Board for 8 years; and on the Immanuel Lutheran Church council in Rock Falls for 6 years. Survivors include his daughters: Sheri (Brian) Kelly of Tinley Park, Sheila Kincaid of Milan and Ann (Bruce) Cooper of Tampico; six grandchildren: Evan (Katie) Cooper, Julia Cooper, Gaige Kincaid, Joshua Kincaid, Barrett Kincaid and Brianna Kincaid; and great grandson Henry Cooper. He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife Sharon; brother Martin Tornow; step father Royal Jackson; and son in law Mike Kincaid. Visitation will be held on Monday July 7, 2025 from 4-6 PM at New Life Lutheran Church in Sterling. The funeral will follow on Tuesday at 10:00 AM in the church with Pastor Drew Williams officiating. Arrangements entrusted to the Garland Funeral Home. In lieu of flowers, a memorial will be established.
