Deacon Lazarus Anthony, Jr., son of the late Rev. Lazarus Anthony, Sr. and the late Carrie Dixon Anthony, was born in Halifax County, North Carolina on February 24, 1950 and departed this life on Friday, July 28, 2023.
Lazarus received his education from the Halifax County School System. At an early age, he joined Mt. Zion Holiness Church. He was a deacon for thirty-three years. In his spare time, he loved fishing, hunting, and singing. He was the lead singer for Larry and the Gospelaires and sung with the Mighty Travelettes.
In addition to his parents, Lazarus was preceded in death by two sisters, Uyonia Anthony and Diane Myrick; three brothers, Willie Anthony, Bryant Anthony, and John Anthony; and step-mother, Pauline Anthony.
Lazarus leaves to cherish his memories his wife of 54 years, Essie Anthony of the home; children, Terri Whitehead of Raleigh, NC, Michael Anthony of Tarboro, NC, and Marshell Anthony of the home; four brothers, Joe T. Anthony of Scotland Neck, NC, Ben Anthony and Robert Anthony of Hobgood, NC and Hosa Anthony, of Baltimore, MD; three sisters, Willie Felton of Scotland Neck, NC, Emma Parker of Virginia, and Laurie Lewis of Tarboro, NC; four grandchildren, Terrance whitehead, Kyla Whitehead, Kemar Anthony and Draymond Anthony; one great-grandchild, Taniya Whitehead; sisters-in-law, Bertha Savage (Howard), Betty Jones (Ronnie), Annie Pittman (Hawley), Dorothy Whitehead (Robert), and Beatrice Wishop; brothers-in-law, Samuel Whitehead, and James Whitehead (Josephine); special friends, Jordan and Daryl Cannon; and a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
Funeral service was held on Sunday, August 6, 2023 at 2:00 at St. Stephen Baptist Church in Scotland Neck, NC. A public viewing was held Saturday, August 5 from 5:00 pm to 7:00 pm at Shawn Lea Funeral Home of Scotland Neck, NC. Burial was in the Kehukee Baptist Church cemetery. Arrangements were handled by Shawn Lea Funeral Home of Scotland Neck.
