Not sure what to say?

Happy heavenly birthday, Lee!

We are neighbors, just a couple blocks from each other, your son has been my son’s teacher, and I’d visit with Melissa quite often on her walks with the dog. I don’t know your family real well though we live so close, but I wanted to let you know that my heart goes out to you all and I say a prayer for you when I pass your house.

So sorry to hear Lee's passing. I worked with Lee for 20 yrs and known him 30+. I along with many Wells Fargo team members had a lot of great times with him. He will truly be missed by many. God bless.

I was very sad and shocked to hear about Lee’s passing. I knew Lee for about 30 years as we played basketball together for almost 20 years. Even though he had tremendous basketball ability he always remained very humble. What I remember most though was how great of a family man he was as he brought his kids to the gyms when they were very young and interacted with them. He will be missed by many. Rest in Peace Shooter !

I am so very sorry to learn of Lee’s passing. My wife and I extend our deepest condolences to the family. I enjoyed getting to know Lee and your family through his and my favorite sport - basketball!! I had the pleasure of playing with Lee for many years at the local SF YMCA, and what a fine player he was— with more moves than anyone I have ever played with! Guarding Lee was impossible and just no fun. Later, as Melissa joined middle school it was great to coach her in travel ball and get...

May your hearts soon be filled with wonderful memories of joyful times together as you celebrate a life well lived. It sounds like you guys have great memories from your life together. May God keep you in His loving arms, granting you peace and comfort!

Vlastuin Family - Thoughts, prayers, and deepest sympathies to all of you from the entire Schaap Family. Leland was a co-worker of mine for years at Wells Fargo and we kept running into each other through the years with our daughters summer basketball teams and also at Wells Fargo gatherings. He was just one of the best guys around and real Southwest Minnesota Basketball Legend from my wife's home town of Beaver Creek MN... I don't really have the right words -- we were both shocked and...

I didnt know Leland but it sounds like he was a wonderful guy. May God bless you and your family in this time of sorrow.

So sorry to hear about Leland. Many good memories of seeing him and your family at family gatherings. Thinking of everyone.

Obituary

Leland's Obituary

Leland Jay Vlastuin, 58, passed away unexpectedly from an undiagnosed heart condition on November 28, 2021. Leland was born in Canton, SD to Gerrit and Ramona Vlastuin. He grew up on a farm near Beaver Creek, MN and graduated from Hills-Beaver Creek High School. He then attended college at the University of South Dakota where he graduated with a degree in business administration.

Leland married Lynette Haagenson on June 7th, 1985 and they built their home in the Sioux Falls area. They were blessed with four children, Jordan, Jared, Melissa and Madysen. Leland would tell you that his biggest accomplishment was his four children. He was incredibly proud of them. "Grampa Lee" was enjoying the heck out of his grandkids, Kylie, William and Kellan. A kid at heart, he loved playing with them, bringing them candy, and just being goofy with them. He was looking forward to welcoming two more grandbabies in February and April.

Leland was a great dad who enjoyed watching his kids play sports through the years. His biggest sports love was basketball and he spent much of the last several years inside one gym or another. He was looking forward to following his grandkids as they started playing sports.

He was an avid fisherman. He enjoyed taking trips to Bitter Lake, Waubay, and Canada with his sons and friends. He loved his fishing boat and the time he spent in it with people he cared about. Leland also enjoyed pheasant hunting. He very recently enjoyed taking his yearly fall trip to Northern SD to hunt and fish with his friends. He still loved to play a game of ball and loved riding his bike all over Lennox.

Leland was a jokester and prankster. He possessed an easy laugh that was completely infectious and put those around him at ease. He enjoyed talking to people and making people laugh. He will be greatly missed by all who knew him.

Leland is survived by his wife of 36 years, Lynette; his children Jordan (Noelle) of Harrisburg, Jared (Abby) of Worthing, Melissa Bauder (Eric) of Sioux Falls, Madysen of Lennox, and his grandchildren Kylie, William and Kellan. He is also survived by his mother, Ramona Vlastuin of Sioux Falls, and sisters Linda (Chuck) Wattier, Eagle River Alaska, and Lorae (Gene) Lodes of Sioux Falls, and many other relatives and friends. . He was preceded in death by his father, Gerrit Vlastuin and his father-in-law, Bill Haagenson.
