So very sorry for this great loss, my husband & I are friends of Dennis here in Jamesport, Mo. Dennis is a kind & caring member of our community, reading his father’s obituary I’d say a fine man raised a fine son. God bless this family, Jerry, Carolyn, Chad & Rachel.

Leo's Obituary

Leo Deiterman, 89, of Merrill, Iowa, passed away Sunday, July 7, 2024, at his home near Merrill.

Funeral services will be at 10:30 a.m. on Thursday, July 11, 2024, at Rexwinkel Funeral Home in Le Mars. Reverend Bruce Lawler from All Saints Catholic Parish in Le Mars will officiate. Burial will follow at Hillside Cemetery in Merrill.  Visitation with the family present will be from 4:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. on Wednesday, July 10, 2024, at Rexwinkel Funeral Home in Le Mars. Visitation will resume from 9:30 a.m. until service time on Thursday at the funeral home. Arrangements are with the Rexwinkel Funeral Home in Le Mars, Iowa. Expressions of sympathy can be extended to the family through www.rexwinkelfh.com. 

Leo John Deiterman, the son of Peter and Sophia (Steichen) Deiterman, was born on March 3, 1935, near Le Mars, Iowa. He was raised near the Merrill area, where he received his education in the country school system.  

Leo ran heavy equipment for several contractors in the area, building roads. He also did dozer work for farmers, building terraces. 

He was united in marriage to Lorraine Skinner on June 22, 1954, in Jefferson, South Dakota. They moved around a bit while Leo worked on building roads. In 1965, they moved to their current home near Merrill, Iowa. Lorraine passed away on November 18, 2020. 

Survivors include 3 sons: Danny Deiterman of Omaha, NE, Dennis Deiterman of Missouri, and Dean Deiterman of Akron, IA; 2 daughters: Deborah Ulven (Joseph Hobbs) of New Mexico and Darla Heronimus of Wyoming; 19 grandchildren; 37 great grandchildren; 1 great great grandchild; his in laws, Roger (Patty) Skinner of Elk Point, SD, Lois Ann (Douglas) Wagner of Jefferson, SD, and Janet Sayler of Rapid City, SD; and several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Peter and Sophia Deiterman; his wife, Lorraine Deiterman; his daughter, Diane Webster; two brothers: Gerald Deiterman and Donald Deiterman; 3 sons in law; 2 daughters in law; and his siblings in laws: Ardel Sayler, Glennes Deiterman, and Nadine (Roy) Sexton.
