After Leona retired, she volunteered at numerous places. She made blankets for World Relief, helped at the Bethesda Thrift store, and volunteered at Wellspring Lutheran Home for 20 years. In 2014, she was honored with the Wellspring Volunteer of the Year award. One of Leona's favorite activities was being a Stephen Minister, which she did for more than 15 years. Besides all of the special family celebrations, walking across the Mackinac Bridge on Labor Day was one of the memorable highlights of her life. After living and working on a farm for more than 90 years, Leona moved to Winter Village in Frankenmuth several years ago.
