Not sure what to say?

She was such a wonderful lady. I have missed seeing her at the library. She was an avid reader. Blessings to her family.

Leona was one of my mother’s best friends, and she was always so kind to me as I was growing up. She was a sweet caring woman, and she will be missed.

Leona's Obituary

Leona Perrero Walk, 98, of DePue, passed away on Monday, June 23, 2025, at Manor Court of Peru.

A funeral Mass for Leona will begin at 10:00 AM, Tuesday, July 1st, at St. Mary Catholic Church in DePue, with burial immediately following at the DePue Village Cemetery.  Cremation has been accorded.

The Barto Funeral Home, Spring Valley, is honored to be assisting Leona’s family.

Leona was born on December 12, 1926 in Spring Valley to George and Nellie Perrero. She lived in Spring Valley until elementary school and then moved to DePue. She graduated DePue High School in 1944 and went to St. Francis school of nursing in Peoria. She married Walter Walk on September 4, 1948.  He preceded her in death on January 13, 2010.

Her first RN job was at St. Margaret’s Hospital in Spring Valley, where she became the head nurse on the pediatric floor. She also was the school nurse at DePue schools for a number of years, she did private duty nursing and also worked with Dr. Davito at the Spring Valley Nursing Center, where she was also head nurse. She retired from J&L Steel/LTV, where she was the onsite nurse until 1997.

She is survived by a sister, Maryann Barth, of Peru; a brother, Don Perrero, of Mahomet, IL; many nieces and nephews; and her greatest joys, her grandchildren, Lisa McGuire of LaSalle, IL and Tony Walk of Mark, IL; and her great-grandchildren, Zach and Hallie McGuire and Makenzie, Marshall, and Kamden Walk. She will be sorely missed by them all.

Her house was always the place to be for the grandchildren, great grandchildren, and all of their friends: sledding, swimming, building forts in the yard, biking and skateboarding down the driveway, enjoying cinnamon apples and cream cheese crackers. She enjoyed cooking for everyone, (she made the best spaghetti), baking bread and coffee cakes, reading, and working outside in her yard and garden. Her family has fond memories of the ringing dinner bell when it was time to eat, helping her prepare meals and set the table, taking Gator rides around the property , sleeping on the porch in the summertime, mushroom hunting, watching the hummingbirds, and playing Sorry.

In addition to her husband, she was also preceded in death by her sister, Dorothy Pirog; her brother, George Perrero; and her son, Rod Walk, on October 18, 2011.
