Levi Huffman Humphreys, Jr., 83 of Fancy Gap, passed away on Tuesday, August 23, 2016 at his home. Levi was born in Sutton, WV on Feb. 19th, 1933 to the late Levi Huffman and Mary Bertha Bickham Humphreys. He attended Sutton High School and participated in many sports, but his focus was on football and basketball. He went on to attend King College in Bristol, TN and played guard on the basketball team for King. He graduated from King with a Bachelor of Arts in History.
Levi met Betty while at King and they were married in 1956. Their first child, Cindy, was born in 1958 while they were both continuing their education in Richmond. He graduated with a Bachelor of Divinity in June of 1960.
Levi served three churches in the Littleton area of NC. From there he pastored The Piedmont Presbyterian Church in Burlington, NC. There Diane was born in 1963.
After accepting a call from the Fuquay-Varina Presbyterian Church, he continued his education at Duke University in Durham, NC. He graduated from Duke Magna cum Laude with a Masters in Theology. They were in Fuquay from 1967 to 1991 during which time he was chosen to be the Chaplain for the Department of Correction. He served in this role for 12 years before accepting a call to Dinwiddie and Fairview Presbyterian Churches. It was from these churches that Levi was honored with the title of pastor Emeritus. He loved the congregations of all of his churches and particularly enjoyed the youth programs. Levi became well known for his “Tater Family” youth sermon which adults and children seemed to love.
His love for all children was evident especially for his two daughters and five grandchildren. With two of his grandchildren being Autistic, he had a soft spot in his heart for special needs children.
Levi lived a long life dedicated to service and ministry. He was truly a good and faithful servant for the Lord.
Survivors include his wife, Elizabeth Wilson Humphreys; daughters, Cynthia York Humphreys Scotton and Diane Humphreys Williams; grandchildren, Allyson Scotton, Julius Alexander Scotton, Anna Olivia Scotton, Joshua Daniel Roberts, and Joseph Aaron Roberts; sisters, Marjorie Hill and Dorothy Soule; and brothers, Lon Humphreys and John Humphreys.
Funeral services will be held on Friday, August 26, 2016 at Fairview Presbyterian Church at 1:00 PM with Pastor Ben Behrendt officiating. Burial will follow in the Dinwiddie Cemetery. The family will receive friends at the church on Friday from 12:00 until 1:00 PM prior to the funeral service. In lieu of flowers the family suggest a donation be made to Autism Speaks or the American Cancer Society. Vaughan-Guynn-McGrady Chapel is serving the family.
