Lillian Mae Gumescheimer was born on May 30, 1934, in Kansas to John and Lydia Gumescheimer. She married the love of her life, Harry Born, on May 21, 1950, in Bazine, Kansas. The couple met at a Congregational Church conference, beginning a lifelong partnership rooted in faith, devotion, and love.
Their first home was at the Schwab place, 13 miles northeast of Darrouzett, where they lived until Harry was called to serve his country in February 1952. Harry departed by train for San Antonio, Texas, where he was stationed. Lillian remained in Bazine with her parents until April, when she moved to Burkburnett while Harry was stationed at Sheppard Air Force Base. In July, Harry was transferred to Walker Air Force Base in Roswell, New Mexico. On July 8, 1954, Harry departed on a B-50 with the 509th Bomb Wing for a three-month deployment to Guam, while Lillian stayed in Bazine with her parents. In October, Harry returned to Roswell, and Lillian’s father, John, drove her there so the couple could be reunited.
Harry and Lillian eventually made their home on Highway 305 in Lipscomb County, Texas, where they raised their four sons: Stanley, Darrell, Lynn, and James.
Lillian was a very talented homemaker. She was an accomplished quilter, crewel embroidery artist, and seamstress. She was also well known for her beautiful wedding and birthday cakes and always had sweet tea or a baked treat ready when family stopped by. There truly was nothing she could not do. Family favorites included her candy bar cookies, ginger snaps, and Danish rolls.
Lillian was a faithful member of St. John Congregational Church of Follett for 60 years. She later attended Darrouzett Baptist Church from 1994 until 2020, before returning to St. John Congregational Church until moving into the nursing home.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Harry Born; her parents, John and Lydia Gumescheimer; her son, Darrell Born; her brothers, Vernon and Clarence Gumescheimer; her sisters-in-law, Genelda Gumescheimer, Irene Hamburger, and Gertrude Born; her brother-in-law, Harvey Hamburger; her granddaughter, Tamara Kay Born; her great-grandsons, Sterling Alex Franks and Daryl James Born; and her great-granddaughter, Dawson Ann Born.
Lillian is survived by her sons: Stanley (Ronda) Born of Darrouzett, Lynn (Rayma) Born of Follett, and James (Dana) Born of Perryton; her brother-in-law, Leroy Born; and her sister-in-law, Evelyn Gumescheimer. She is also survived by her grandchildren: Terri (Gene) Franks, Weston (Kristin) Born, Nicole Woodson, Jessica (Bryan) Bell, Lane (Shayne) Born, Lonnie (Chelsea) Born, Ethan Born, and Evan Born; her great-grandchildren: Sheldon (Taylor) Franks, Sierra Franks, Sheridan Franks, Shayne Franks, Sheyenne Franks, Hudson Born, Kortlyn Born, Cambryn Born, Breckyn Born, Kulton Garton, Ryker Garton, Dash Garton, Alexis Bell, Brooklyn Bell, Jenna Born, Landon Born, Holly Born, and Dixon Born; and her great-great-grandchildren: Gunner, Sam, Truitt, and Bennett Franks, along with a host of nieces, nephews, and cousins.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorials be made to Ochiltree General Hospice Volunteers, 3101 Garrett, Perryton, Texas 79070.
