Lois Jean Grossman, 94, passed away November 21, 2025, at Bethany Home in Brandon, SD.
Lois “Jean” Grossman was born in Kimberly, Nevada on December 24, 1930, to John and Myrtle Burke. The family moved to Ft. Wayne, Indiana and she graduated from Central High School in 1948 and International Business College where she received a Bachelor of Science Degree in Commerce in 1950. Jean met her husband, Duke Grossman, who was in the Marines Corps prior to his going to Korea in 1951. On his return they were married in Ft. Wayne.
Following Duke’s discharge from the military, in 1955 they settled in Ft. Wayne. After having two sons, Mike and Bud, they opened Duke’s Floor Covering which they operated until closing and moving to South Dakota in 1972.
Jean worked as a legal secretary at Davenport Evans Law Firm for over 20 years before retiring in 1995.
Jean loved her family and enjoyed watching birds—especially cardinals. She found beauty in sunsets and cloudy South Dakota skies, loved fishing, and made friends easily, always staying social. And let’s not forget her love for the Chicago Bears—always cheering them on.
Jean is survived by her two sons, Mike (Julie) and Bud (Paula); seven grandchildren, Erick (Jen), Dan (Tanya), Ryan (Shaelee), Jeff, Kaia (Kurtis) Hedrick, Emma and Charlie Mogen; seven great grandchildren, Riley, Sam, Kinley, Kamryn, Kylie, Selma, Sawyer.
Jean was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Duke; sister, Syd; brother, John “Buck” Burke; and numerous nieces and nephews.
A celebration of life visitation will be Tuesday, November 25, 2025, at 5:00-7:00 p.m. with a short service at 7:00 p.m. at Heritage Funeral Home. Interment will be Wednesday, November 26, 2025, at 11:00am at Hills of Rest Memorial Park.
