Loretta “Lori” Bingham Sweeney passed away peacefully surrounded by her family on Wednesday, October 8, 2025. Born in 1931 in Oklahoma and raised in Kansas, she later moved to Illinois to attend Northwestern University and had been a resident of Mundelein since 1960. After graduation from Northwestern University, she began a lifelong connection to education, innovation, and community. As an educational entrepreneur, Loretta co-founded Ombudsman Educational Services for at-risk youth. She dedicated her life to helping children learn in new and meaningful ways and held a deep belief in the potential of every student.Loretta loved to travel and cherished time spent with her family, finding joy in shared stories, laughter, and new experiences.Her legacy of love, curiosity, and dedication to others will continue to inspire all who knew her.She is survived by her two daughters, Patricia (Charles Colette) and Susan (James) Datin; step-son, Mike Sweeney (Susan Hare); grandsons Matthew (Kathryn), Jack, and Sam; granddaughters by marriage Ashley (Joshua) Parrent and Jennifer (Joe) Zeit; and great-grandchildren James, Caleb, Kenzie, and Coco, along with her dear friends Janice, Bruce, and Marcus (Carly) Zagorniak, whose friendship enriched her life.To honor Loretta’s memory, the family kindly requests that, in lieu of flowers, donations be made to The Michael J. Fox Foundation for Parkinson’s Research—a cause that was deeply meaningful to her and has personally touched our family.Donations may be made online at www.michaeljfox.org Private services will be held at a later date.
