Lori Jan Toedter, 71, of Palm Coast, Florida, passed away on March 16, 2026, after a long and valiant battle with cancer and Parkinson’s disease. She was born on April 27, 1954, in New Hyde Park, New York, to Warren and Helen Smith of Southold, New York.Lori graduated from Lehigh University, earning her Bachelor of Arts in 1976 and Master of Arts in 1977. She later received her Doctor of Philosophy from the University of Connecticut in 1980. On June 8, 1974, she married the love of her life, Robert Toedter, in Southold, New York.Lori dedicated over 35 years to Moravian University, where she served as a full professor, chaired the Department of Psychology, and contributed as the head of surgical and medical research for a local hospital, retired from the University as Professor Emeritus. She was widely respected for her work as an original research member of what has become the largest and longest-running generational study of child abuse in the world. She was also a primary researcher and author on parental grieving for neonatal and postnatal infant loss, including work associated with development of the Perinatal Grief Scale now translated into twenty-eight different languages and still considered one of the most advanced studies on the subject.She was a proud member of the Daughters of the American Revolution (DAR) and the Baldwin and Palm Coast Yacht Clubs. Lori had a passion for sailing, fishing, water sports, Bridge, Scrabble, skiing, and gardening.In 1999, Lori moved to Palm Coast, Florida, from Bethlehem, Pennsylvania.Lori is survived by her beloved husband of 52 years, Robert Toedter; her sons, Jason Toedter and his wife, Gabriella, and Jeremy Toedter and his wife, Marelle; her brother, Glenn Smith; her brother-in-law, William Toedter; and her cherished grandchildren, Olivia and Lilah.Private services will be held at the Marina Cove Clubhouse on April 28, 2026, from 11:00 a.m. until 3:00 p.m. She will be inurned at a later date in the Eternal Reef.In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made in Lori’s name to Moravian University.The family of Mrs. Toedter was grateful to have entrusted her arrangements to Clymer Funeral Home & Cremations.
