My heart is heavy today, finding it that my dear friends has no longer here. I thought about my friend Dorothy and her loving husband Louis of years. SFC (Ret) Louis Walter VanWright entered into rest on Friday, May 3, 2019, at Augusta University Medical Center in Augusta, GA. Mr. VanWright was born in Opelousas, Louisiana to Edmond and Mary VanWright. Louis, or affectionately known as "Poppy," was born Nov. 14, 1941. He was the sixth of nine children. He was married to his true love, Ms Dorothy Jean Jenkins in 1982 and stayed wedded until her death May 8, 2015. He was a 1961 graduate of J.S. Clark High School and furthered his education serving in the United States Army.
Mr. VanWright was very talented.He loved music and cooking. From 1961-1971 he traveled with various blues musicians, including the late B.B. King as a lead saxophone player.
In the midst of his music career, in 1966 he was drafted to serve in the military and served in the Vietnam War. During his distinguished 24 year military career he became a professional chef and managed several military Dining Facilities until his retirement in 1989.
SFC(Ret.) VanWright was a member of True Vine Baptist Church (Grand Prairie, LA) where he accepted Christ as a young child. He is survived by his sister, Mary Catherine Breashears (Irving, TX); five children, Malik Rosette-Jones (Augusta, GA), Janet Rosette (Opelousas, LA), Desiree Sapp (Houston, TX), Tania Sapp (Augusta, GA), Briana Boatwright (South Korea), Brittany Rosette-Jones (Augusta, GA); two grandchildren, Tania Danielle Walker (Augusta, GA) and Kya Jenee Barnwell (Houston, TX); one great granddaughter, Taren McKenzie Lee (Augusta, GA); friends; Robert and Roger Savoy (Los Angeles, CA), Clement Simeon (Opelousas, LA); one devoted God-Daughter, Jamika Crawford-Dent (Augusta, GA); and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.
He was preceded in death by his sisters Louilda Richardson and Lou-Marie (Sis) Dukes, and brothers Hilton ("Old Man"), Howard ("Blake"), Emile, Harold ("Cruze"), and Edward ("Tatoo") VanWright.
The family will receive visitors on Monday, May 13, 6:00 p.m. – 8:00 p.m. at Williams Funeral Home. You may also sign the guest book at www.wmsfh.com. Funeral services will take place on Tuesday, May 14 at 11:00 a.m. in the chapel at Williams Funeral Home, 2945 Old Tobacco Road, Hephzibah, GA 30815. Evangelist Annette Williams of Fairview Missionary Baptist Church will be officiating. Entombment will take place at Hillcrest Memorial Park, 2700 Deans Bridge Road, Augusta, GA 30906.
