Not sure what to say?

I will be forever grateful to Phil for giving me a second chance to pursue a career I loved. I do not know what I did to deserve him taking a chance on me, but it changed my life. He will forever be part of my story and I endeavor to pass along his professionalism and love of aviation to those whom I now teach.

Blue skies and tailwinds, Phil.

Respectfully,

Carl

Lt. Col. Phillip's Obituary

Beloved Air Force Pilot, Veteran, Husband, and Father Lt. Colonel Phillip R. Jeffryes (Ret.), 87, a proud U.S. Air Force veteran, decorated pilot, devoted husband, and loving father, passed away peacefully on August 5, 2025, surrounded by his family and held in their endless love.

Born on April 23, 1938, in Greenfield, Iowa, Phil grew up with a deep sense of patriotism and a fascination with flight that would chart the course of his life. Phil attended ROTC, being placed in a leadership role and he later earned his degree from Wichita State University and soon after began his distinguished military career with the United States Air Force. Phil later earned his Master’s degree at Troy State University in Alabama.

As a skilled pilot, Phil flew a numerous range of aircraft throughout his 24 years of service, logging thousands of hours in the skies across five continents. He was known for his precision, leadership, and calm under pressure-qualities that earned him the respect of peers and the admiration of those who served under him.

During his career, he held key operational and training roles and was deployed in support of both humanitarian missions and military operations. He received multiple commendations, including the Meritorious Service Medal and Air Medal, recognizing his excellence and dedication.

But for all of Phil’s professional achievements, his proudest legacy was always his family. He was a devoted husband to his sweetheart, Lois Sharon Jeffryes, with whom he shared 38 years of marriage built on love, loyalty, and deep mutual respect.

After retiring from active duty, Phil continued to serve others, mentoring young aviators and worked in the private sector as a pilot. He trained countless pilots at Flight Safety, finishing his career with over 50 years of accident-free flying experience as a pilot. He was a respected leader, a loyal friend, and a man of deep principle who led by example in all things.

Phil is survived by his beloved wife, Lois Sharon Jeffryes; their children, Chris, Scott (Kristi), Spencer (Michaelyn), Julie, and Cecelia (Mark); and numerous grandchildren and great-grandchildren. He is also survived by his brother, Doug (Rita), and countless extended family, fellow veterans, and friends who were fortunate to know him.

At the time of passing, family that were present had a small gathering. Honoring Phil’s wishes, there will be no funeral service. Instead, remember Phil for his amazing character and wit. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made in Phil’s memory to K9s For Warriors (K9sForWarriors.org), having a passion to help both veterans and animals.

Lt. Colonel Phillip Jeffryes lived a life defined by duty, grounded in love, and lifted by purpose. His flight may be complete, but his example and spirit live on in the hearts of all who knew him.

"Holy Rabbit Hutch, it's a crazy, crazy world"
