Brothers and sisters Kahlenborn: Klaus, Heribert, Lutz, Mechtild, Hildegard
Dear Tante Mechthild, Chris, Tina and Ela,
I am sad with you about the death of your husband and your father, my mother's next younger brother and my “Onkel aus Amerika”.
Starting from my childhood I have admired him for his self-confidence and courage. I liked to listen when he talked about how things worked in “America”, his company, his differentiated comments e.g. about the $/DM exchange rate at that time. It was a pleasure to meet him and you, his hearty and open family, during...

Dear Tante Mechthild,
we were truly sad to hear about the death of Onkel Lutz. We still have our visit at your home in Dillsburg as well as your very kind hospitality in very good memories. We got to know Onkel Lutz as a very friendly and humorous man and we have best memories of him. We remember our astonishment to learn about the similarity between Lutz and his brother (our grandfather) Klaus in gesture, facial expression and in the way both of them spoke, despite the many years...

Liebe Tante Mechthild,

I will always remember Lutz and Mishi as two people that came into my life at a very difficult time and showed me and my daughters only love, wisdom, and guidance. My children were small and they would take care of them after school until I got off work. I would hear all about the poppy seed bread they loved that Mishi would make, the onions in the back yard that they would make pretend soup and the books they would read. Lutz went with me to buy my car since he was so educated in so many...

To my American relatives of the Kahlenborn family,
I was very sad to hear about the death of my grandfather's brother. Although I haven't seen Lutz so often in my life I have the best memories of him. We know that he was very important for his younger brother Klaus and that their relationship was close despite of the big distance between Pennsylvania and Germany. I wish Tante Mechthild and her children Christoph, Martina and Manuela and her grandchildren all the best and that they stay...

Ludolf Kahlenborn of Dillsburg, Pennsylvania passed away early in the morning on July 21, 2014 at the age of 89.Born in Mulheim Ruhr, Germany in 1925 as the fifth of six children he attended Eduard Grammar School but was enlisted into the army at the age of 17. After surviving World War II, he studied at Braunschweig University which he helped rebuild in order to attend and graduated from the university with a degree in Electrical Engineering. His career began with Siemens as a manager in the power transformer unit. In 1958, he met the love of his life, Mechthild Schumacher and the two were soon married on August 20th, 1959. It wasn?t long thereafter that he was transferred to New York City with Siemens working in the Empire State Building where he worked for 11 years. In 1960, the two were blessed with a beautiful boy, Christoph who was followed in 1962 by a sister, Martina and in 1963, their third child, Manuela Kahlenborn. Having the desire to branch out on his own, Ludolf Kahlenborn developed his own engineering company, Condis Control in 1972. Soon thereafter, he merged with Mauell Corporation, a German Company where he became the president and CEO of the American division running the operations in Wycoff, New Jersey. The company was moved to Dillsburg, Pennsylvania in 1984 where he finished out his career in 1992.But his life as an electrical engineer doesn?t begin to scratch the surface of who he was. A gentle soul who never wavered when it came to honesty, integrity, and punctuality. A true intellectual, who enjoyed reading the New York Times and Wall Street Journal cover to cover. It wasn?t unusual to catch him daydreaming and when asked about what, his answer was often solving mathematical equations or physics problems. His understanding of history and geography was second to none as was his love of classical music which was a constant throughout his life. Those that knew him well will most fondly remember and miss his master of concocting a perfect Manhatten, a cocktail which he drank religiously at 5:00 p.m. most Friday and Saturday evenings. He is survived by his loving wife, sister Mechthild Schmalohr, three children, and seven grandchildren; Christopher, Lucas, Katherine, Jennifer, Samantha, Luke and Mary Ann. Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Friday, July 25, 2014, at 11:00 am in the St. Elizabeth Ann Seton Catholic Church, 310 Hertzler Rd., Mechanicsburg. Burial will follow in the Franklin Cemetery, Dillsburg. A visitation will be held Thursday from 6:30-8:30 pm in the Cocklin Funeral Home, Inc., 30 N. Chestnut St., Dillsburg. In lieu of flowers donations can be made to The Passionist Nuns, 2715 Churchview Avenue, Pittsburgh PA 15227 or The Dillsburg Food Pantry, 6 North 2nd Street, Dillsburg,Pa 17019
